The president of Sierra Leone Ernest Bai Koroma has launched an ambitious US$ 217.5m, three year National Youth Programme that seeks to create one million decent new jobs - the first ever and biggest national youth programme – reminding the nation that “the nation can only move forward when its youths step forward” at the Miatta Conference Hall in Freetown yesterday.

A total of 602 young entrepreneurs in Newton, Western Rural District and from the Business Development Service centre operated by the African Foundation for Development (AFFORD) in Makeni, the Northern Regional capital, have graduated on the 28th January and 7th February 2014 respectively.

With Sierra Leone recording one of the fastest growth in human development index in African since 2000, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Dr. Samura Kamara has launched the Human Development Report 2013 titled “The Rise of the South: Human Progress in a Diverse World” at the State Hall, Parliament building in Freetown, yesterday 19th March 2013, attended by ministers of government, foreign diplomatic missions, members of parliament, senior government officials, civil society activists and representatives from the academia.

The newly appointed Minister of Local Government and Rural development (MLGRD), Hon Mrs. Diana Konomanyi has commissioned a rural market and a Community Resource Centre for youth in the Sembehun and Moyamba towns, Southern Sierra Leone last week as part of the UNDP/UNCDF funded Local Government Economic Development Joint Programme (LGED-JP).

Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon Hadiru Kalokoh, has called on Paramount Chiefs and tribal headmen to “Strive to become modern chiefs of the 21st century … chiefs who administer their subjects using modern tenets of democracy and human rights as against the old ways of absolute monarchy coercion” at the launch of the Government’s newly formulated Chiefdom and Traditional Administration Policy in the four major cities of Kenema, Bo, Makeni and Freetown.

From market beggar to shoe producer in Sierra Leone – “The most important thing is that now I have hope for the future”
The story of Umaru Kargbo, in Sierra Leone’s Northern City of Makeni, 113 miles from the capital city of Freetown, is one of resilience and of sheer determination to lift oneself out of poverty. It is also the story of how a country riddled by suffering and stagnation caused by years of civil war and gun-toting youths rampaging through the countryside is emerging slowly into one where its hitherto marginalized youths are participating in national development and social transformation.

UNDP Goodwill Ambassador, Marta Vieira Da Silva, five-time FIFA world female player of the year, ended a two-day visit to Sierra Leone Sunday to promote women’s empowerment with the message “When women succeed, we all win.”
