What We Do

UNDP has had a presence in Sierra Leone since 1965, working in partnership with the Government of Sierra Leone, development partners, UN agencies, civil society and local communities, contributing to good governance, peace and prosperity. UNDP Sierra Leone is committed to assisting the Government of Sierra Leone to improve the lives of its citizens, especially the poorest and most vulnerable, and to ensure a future that offers equality, dignity and opportunity for all. More

Our Goals

From 2009 to 2012, UNDP played an important role in the United Nations Joint Vision for Sierra Leone, a common strategy adopted to enhance the impact of the UN’s contribution to consolidate peace and promote sustainable development in Sierra Leone. The introduction of a UN Transitional Joint Vision covering 2013-2014 continues to recognize the joint responsibility of the UN family to define its programmes and activities to ensure a critical and sustainable contribution to the progress of Sierra Leone. Local Governance and Economic Development Joint Programme

The Local Governance and Economic Development Joint Programme (LGED-JP) seeks to improve the socio-economic well-being of Sierra Leoneans at the local level. Building on the Government of Sierra Leone’s Decentralisation Policy, Local Economic Development (LED) programming supports local wealth creation, increased employment opportunities and improved economic productivity and service delivery. more

Improving the Rule of Law and Access to Justice Programme

The Access to Justice Programme builds the capacity of national institutions through the training of Police Prosecutors, Family Support Unit of the Sierra Leone Police and members of the Judiciary. In addition, the Programme involves the development and delivery of knowledge products, community outreach and legal awareness programmes, support to advocacy for law reform and the provision of support services to victims of sexual violence. more

Preventive Development

The Preventive Development Project will support the Government’s priorities on land tenure and management, Natural Resource Governance, management of the extractives industry, sustainable energy, climate change and Disaster Risk Reduction through institutional reforms and strengthening, policy development and enforcement as well as capacity building and the inclusion of women in environmental decision-making at all levels of governance. more
