New paradigms for public participation emerging – the first public hearing in a local assembly featuring tweet wall and live streaming
Innovative applications of public participatory mechanisms are launched at the Town Assembly of Zrenjanin, where the first public hearing on local level in Serbia took place. The topic was Draft Strategy of Sustainable Development of the Town of Zrenjanin 2014-2020.

Workshop dedicated to climate change, under the Second National Communication of the Republic of Serbia to UNFCCC held in Tara Mountain
Goal of the first, out of three awareness raising workshops, was to increase the level of knowledge amongst stakeholders at national and local level in relation to climate change policies and programmes in Serbia with an eye towards their future involvement in development and implementation of climate change policies and programmes within their respective communities – potentially providing input into national-level policies and programmes as well as developing local actions to support national targets.

UNDP in Serbia handed over the IT equipment worth over 3,000 EUR to the City of Zrenjanin. The equipment will be used for enhancing innovative means of communication such as Twitter and other social media, as well as for citizens’ participation in the work of the local Assembly.

The United Nations has received additional US $ 1.8 million in response to the floods that have hit Serbia in mid-May. The funding comes from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) in order to provide support to the people from areas affected by the floods.

The United Nations team of experts says that a massive reconstruction, recovery and clean-up effort is needed in response to the unprecedented floods that hit Serbia in mid-May. In a report delivered to the Government of Serbia today, the experts warn of health risks from stagnant water, potential risk to the environment and damage to agriculture.

According to Institute for Social Policy, Centers for Social Work (CSW) registered 9877 cases of domestic violence in 2013. This represents almost 6% increase in comparison to 2012. The share of women victims of violence is significantly higher than of men -70% and 30% respectively.

Since 2006, UNDP has been supporting establishment of positions of Roma coordinators in Serbian municipalities. This resulted in creation of a network of 47 municipal Roma coordinators at local level, hired as full time staff in local self-governments, working on temporary contracts or as volunteers.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in cooperation with CeSID LtD, presented the Eighth Corruption Benchmarking Survey at today’s press conference in the Media Centre Belgrade. This research cycle confirmed the optimism and a conviction of citizens that the authorities intend to curb corruption. However, the living standard, unemployment and poverty have again diverted attention of citizens away from corruption. Corruption fell third on the list of the most important problems which citizens face.

Students from seven Serbian faculties of tourism: Faculty of Economics from Subotica, Faculty of Economics from Belgrade, Faculty for Tourism and Hotel Management, University of Singidunum, Faculty for Tourism and Sport TIMS, University Educons, Faculty for Hospitality and Tourism from Vrnjacka Banja, Department for Geography, Tourism and Hotel Management, University of Novi Sad and Business College from Novi Sad, presented their 2020 vision of Vlasina as an eco - tourist destination.
