    UNDP SERBIA JOINS GLOBAL OBSERVATION OF WORLD AIDS DAY

    UNDP in Serbia joins the global effort in observing World AIDS Day. UN Sec.-General Ban Ki-Moon notes in his address for this day the progress that is being made in ending the AIDS epidemic, citing the commitment by world leaders to end AIDS by 2030.

    Workshop on hygiene and healthcare to improve living conditions for Roma in Novi Pazar settlement

    A community workshop on hygiene and health care with 33 Roma children was organized on 1st November in Blazevo settlement in Novi Pazar. School-aged children participated in various tasks during the day, addressing hygiene and health issues in their environment. This is just one in a series of workshops aimed at improved living conditions of Roma in this settlement.

    UNDP SERBIA COMMITS TO INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR ELIMINATING POVERTY

    UNDP Serbia is reasserting its commitment to act against extreme poverty, as the UN observes International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. In his message to mark the occasion, UN Sec. General Ban Ki-Moon said the UN would “think, decide and act together against extreme poverty—and plan for a world where no-one is left behind.”

    2nd Youth Theater Festival started

    2nd Youth Theater Festival started last night in Novi Pazar with the play "Antigone” performed by the young actors from Cultural center Pećinci. The festival was opened by the actor Mr. Branislav Trifunovic, who is also the President of the Jury and Festival’s main promoter.

    51st MOSI games started in Novi Pazar

    51st Inter-municipal Youth Sports Games (MOSI) started today in Novi Pazar. More than 2.000 athletes from 29 towns from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia will take part in 15 sport disciplines during the next 4 days.

    Fostering cooperation with municipalities in Southwest Serbia

    Ms. Irena Vojackova-Sollorano, the UN Resident Coordinator visited Kosjerić, Požega, Priboj, Čajetina, Nova Varoš and Prijepolje. During her visit to Southwest Serbia, Ms. Sollorano met the Mayors and local community representatives. She presented the “Improving Human Security in Southwest Serbia” programme activities and planned events for 2014. Mr. Edin Kalac, the newly appointed Programme Coordinator was introduced to partners.

    Number of criminal charges against perpetrators in domestic violence doubled

    According to Institute for Social Policy, Centers for Social Work (CSW) registered 9877 cases of domestic violence in 2013. This represents almost 6% increase in comparison to 2012. The share of women victims of violence is significantly higher than of men -70% and 30% respectively.

    Roma Narratives

    Since 2006, UNDP has been supporting establishment of positions of Roma coordinators in Serbian municipalities. This resulted in creation of a network of 47 municipal Roma coordinators at local level, hired as full time staff in local self-governments, working on temporary contracts or as volunteers.

    The web platform www.sigurnakuca.net has been relaunched in the new version and it represents the first one-stop-shop-info-center on Violence against Women (VaW) in Serbia. VaW is a widely spread form of breach of human rights, violating women’s psychological and physical integrity and a serious social problem that can be stopped only through joint action and loud public condemn of violence

    Each year since 1990 the Human Development Report has published the Human Development Index (HDI) which was introduced as an alternative to conventional measures of national development, such as level of income and the rate of economic growth. The HDI represents a push for a broader definition of well-being and provides a composite measure of three basic dimensions of human development: health, education and income.

    The White Palace turns blue in honor of the International Autism Day

    Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine hosted a reception together with the United Nations in Serbia, the Parents' association of children with autism in Serbia and the support of the Autism Speaks Foundation from New York in honor of the World Autism Awareness Day at the White Palace in Belgrade last evening.
