UNDP Seoul Policy Centre called for greater cooperation with the private sector for sustainable human development in developing countries at the Global Green Hub Korea 2014, the largest conference on “green” industry in Korea. This event was held from May 21-23, 2014 in Songdo.

“UNDP’s neutral and impartial status is one of our greatest strengths. To date, we have 425 development projects with support and funding from business and private foundations. We’re looking to work more with business on climate and ecosystem sustainability, resource management and better energy use, said Artemy Izmestiev, Policy Specialist of UNDP Seoul Policy Centre.

Mr. Izmestiev made the remarks during a presentation on UNDP’s global cooperation with the private sector. He touched on how big international companies including IKEA, Telefonica and Coca-Cola work with UNDP to provide people in developing countries with better access to water, sanitation and good agricultural practices

With Coca-Cola, we’re improving water supplies and sanitation in 18 developing countries. Through this programme, over 400,000 people in Ukraine have benefited from restored springs and education on water management.

Global Green Hub Korea 2014 brought together government officials, international organizations and global companies to discuss climate change and how to tackle it. New technologies and projects were introduced, including soil restoration, renewable energy, wind power systems, and heating system which uses landfill gas.

The Republic of Korea is implementing green technologies, particularly in sustainable energy management. The country uses landfill gas and bio-gas produced from the sewage treatment system. Korea also uses 12 waste incinerators nationwide to produce waste incineration heat.

Korea is now sharing its knowledge of green technology through Official Development Assistance (ODA) activities. The country also hosts the Green Climate Fund which held the 7th Board meeting in Songdo from May 17-21, 2014.
