UNDP and Korea support gender responsive policy management in Asia-Pacific
With support from the Republic of Korea and UNDP, fifteen policymakers from ten countries in the Asia-Pacific region are being assisted in their work to ensure economic policies and poverty reduction strategies address the needs of women, men girls and boys equitably.
Participants from Governments and other organizations working on aspects of economic development, planning agencies and national women's organisations completed the regional course on ‘Gender-Responsive Economic Policy Management’ in Seoul in September 2012.
The three-week course was the first of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on the policy implications of re-envisioning economics through a gender lens.
Participants also shared their knowledge and experience on gender sensitive policy making and budgeting with one another and leading international experts and learned about Korea's own experience.
The event was co-organized by UNDP’s Asia Pacific Regional Centre, the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Korean Institute for Gender Equality Promotion and Education (KIGEPE).
The event marks a major step in the Korea-UNDP partnership on the Global Gender and Economic Policy Management Initiative (GEPMI), which is a comprehensive capacity development and policy advisory services programme that aims to accelerate the achievement of the (MDGs) by making economic policies and poverty reduction strategies deliver results equitably to women and men, girls and boys. The programme was initiated in Africa and has been expanded to the Asia-Pacific region.
The Korea - UNDP GEPMI collaboration began in October 2011, under the auspices of the Korean Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the UNDP Gender Team.
Supporting the Busan Commitments
The Republic of Korea and UNDP believe that the GEPMI Asia-Pacific (GEPMI-AP) programme can play a key role in supporting the implementation of the gender-related commitments of the Busan Outcome Document, agreed at the Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Busan, Korea in December 2011.
GEPMI-AP’s contribution to supporting progress the commitments made in Busan comes through its focus on integrating targets for gender equality and women’s empowerment into accountability mechanisms, mainstreaming gender and promoting gender responsive economic policy management as a whole, as well as the production, analysis and dissemination of gender statistics and gender-responsive budgeting as tools for improved monitoring and accountability.
