The fifth five year economic and social plan (1982-86) marked a turning point in Korea’s development planning process by formally recognizing the link between economic growth and social development.  It incorporated social protection elements such as employment, basic needs such as healthcare and low-cost housing, population, education and other areas.

The NPS is the world's fourth largest public pension fund. It is currently In the process of launching an emergency capital loan program for beneficiaries.

The COMWEL provides various social security and labour welfare services and programs, including integrated assessment and billing of EI and WCI premiums, medical care services, WCI benefits, rehabilitation services and more.
