    Lebanese expert expatriate trains ministries on food safety

    In collaboration with the Ministry of Economy and Trade, the UNDP “Transfer of Knowledge Through Expatriate Nationals” project (TOKTEN) is organizing the opening session of the food safety training on Monday 21st of June at 10am, in Mathaf at the Institute of Finance (1st Floor). Professor Fadi Aramouni, the Lebanese food safety expert from Kansas University, will conduct the trainings which aim at building the capacities of the ministries on food safety inspection. From the 21st until 24th of May, Mr. Aramouni will train 140 inspectors from the Ministry of Economy and Trade in the ministry.

    United Nations and Saudi Arabia launch cooperation for food and drug safety

    The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) was established in 1424H (2003) as an independent body to ensure safety of food and drug products in the Kingdom, reporting directly to the President of the Council of Ministers. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the lead agency in the UN for country level development cooperation, with over $5billion of activities each year in over 177 countries. UNDP started its presence in Saudi Arabia in 1966 and has supported capacity development projects in areas such as public administration, youth empowerment, energy and environment and economic diversification

    Beirut roundtable discussion on laying foundations of the developmental state in the Arab region

    In coordination and co-sponsorship with the United Nations Development Programme’s Regional Center in Cairo (UNDP-RCC), the Carnegie Middle East Center will host the presentation and discussion of UNDP’s Arab Development Challenges Report 2011: Towards the Developmental State in the Arab Region. The discussion will take place at the Carnegie’s premises in Downtown (Bashir Street, Lazarieh bldg., Bloc A) on Friday 11th of May 2012 at 9am. In order to respond to the demand for dignity, social justice and freedom that reverberated across Arab streets since late 2010, the Report argues that Arab states need to adopt a “Developmental state” model based on a new social contract of mutual accountability and shed the rentier-based political economy model

    Business Idea Competition UNDP Encourages Young Entrepreneurs in Blue Nile State

    Khartoum- As part of UN Joint Programme on Youth Employment, UNDP continues to support the new business initiatives that link the youth with sustainable employment opportunities. UNDP launched a second phase of Business Ideas Competition for youth in the Blue Nile State, upon successful completion of similar contest in North & South Kordofan States. The Competition awards start-up micro-grants for successful and innovative small business ideas prepared by aspiring young entrepreneurs.

    Launch of the rehabilitation phase of the Palestinian red crescent society hospital in Gaza

    Gaza – As part of their continuing effort to combat poverty and hunger, representatives from India, Brazil and South Africa, UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRSC) signed an agreement in the amount of one million Dollars to rehabilitate the PRCS building in the Gaza Strip.

H.E Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Adnan Mansour representing H.E Prime Minister Mr. Najib Mikati, UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Robert Watkins, Acting Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon Mr. Diego Escalona Paturel, UMAM D&R’s Director Mr. Lokman Slim, ministers, parliamentarians, ambassadors, UN agencies representatives and civil society activists will participate in this event.     Urgent international action needed to combat social inequalities and environmental risks, UN Secretary-General tells Istanbul forum

    UNDP’s first Global Human Development Forum starts today in Istanbul. Social justice and environmental protection are equally urgent and intrinsically linked universal goals, with coordinated global action needed on both fronts at the UN’s ‘Rio+20’ Conference on Sustainable Development in June, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a message to an audience of development experts, civil society leaders and government officials at the first Global Human Development Forum here today.
