Media workshop on the disaster risk reduction

21 Jul 2011

Under the patronage of the Prime Minister Mr. Najib  Mikati, and in cooperation with the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), the United Nations Development Programme, “Strengthening Disaster Risk Management Capacities in Lebanon” project, is organizing the opening ceremony of the “Disaster Risk Reduction Media Workshop” on Thursday 21st of July at 9 am in the Grand Serail.

Representing the Prime Minister, Mr. Walid Daouk, the Minister of Information, will attend the ceremony along Mr. Seifeldin Abbaro, UNDP’s Country Director and media representatives.

The media workshop will take place on the 21st and 22nd of July in the Grand Serail. It aims at raising the awareness of the reporters/journalists on the disaster risk reduction since they will play an important role in spreading the word to the public at large.

Lebanon is exposed to natural hazards due to its presence on seismic faults and it also began to be affected by global warming as we are witnessing lack of rain for long periods, high temperatures, and an increase in forest fires. Therefore, it is necessary to include the disaster risk reduction in the daily decision-making process, both at the level of civil awareness and good behavior in the event of a disaster, or at the level of planning to build safer cities.
