The inauguration of two water maintenance centers in Tyre and Taibeh

16 Sep 2010

On Thursday, UNDP-ART GOLD Lebanon, and in  collaboration with the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR), will be hosting the inaugurations of the water maintenance centers in Tyre and Taibeh in South Lebanon.

The inauguration of the water maintenance center of Tyre will take place at 11:00 a.m., at the premises of the Union of the Municipalities of Tyre. This will be followed by the inauguration of the water maintenance center of Taibeh at 12:55 p.m. at the Public Library (in Taibeh).

UNDP Country Director Mr. Seifeldine Abbaro will participate in the inaugurations alongside the First Secretary at the Spanish Embassy Mr. Rafael Reig representing H.E. Ambassador of Spain. The President of the Union of Municipalities of Tyre Mr. Abdul-Muhsen Al-Husseini, the President of the Union of Municipalities of Jabal Amel Mr. Ali El-Zein, the Head of the Water Establishment of South Lebanon Mr. Ahmad Nizam and other mayors will also be present.

Both projects are funded by the Spanish government and are being implemented in cooperation with the Water Establishment of South Lebanon. The establishment of these two water maintenance centers aims to improve the water management plan in South Lebanon and to strengthen the infrastructure of the water system. This will be achieved through equipping the centers with essential instruments and machinery, and through providing the needed training to the water technicians. More specifically, the centers were equipped with water leakages detection, an excavator, a small car for transporting the machinery and standard equipment for digging and pipe network refurbishment, welding equipment and an air compressor. The project helped building the capacities of 10 technicians in pipe network maintenance and management to ensure timely response to maintenance problems and to provide better services.

More than 300,000 citizens of the Union of Municipalities of Tyre and 60,000 citizens of the Union of Municipalities of Jabal Amel are benefiting from this project.

South Lebanon chronically confronts a critical water supply situation in most of its villages. The condition of the pipes networks and treatment and distribution plants is largely problematic in terms of management, maintenance and coverage. This situation leads to a high risk of waterborne diseases due to long periods of storage and to absence of disinfection practices.

The establishment of the water maintenance centers in both Tyre and Taibeh falls within the 2009-2010 strategic objectives of UNDP ART GOLD Lebanon; in particular, the objective to enhance the preservation of the environment through an integrated water management.
