    2011 Jordan Human Development Report: Small New Businesses are the Largest Contributor to Job Creation in Jordan

    Amman – Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) account for 37% of total employed and 60% of total employment in the private sector in Jordan, spotlights Jordan Human Development Report 2011 launched here today under the patronage of HRH Princess Basma bint Talal, the Honorary Human Development Ambassador for the (UNDP). It shows while MSME’s do contribute toward development in Jordan through employment and empowerment, their contribution can and should be expanded.

    Public participation key to new constitution making

    Khartoum, With the opening of the Constitution Making Forum, the Government of Sudan initiated a broad-based consultative process for drafting a permanent constitution, here today. The Forum, an initiative of the Advisory Council for Human Rights (ACHR) and is supported by the United Nations, notably the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

    UNDP handover of GFATM HIV program construction sites to FMOH at new central warehouse in Khartoum

    Khartoum – The Undersecretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Isamaldine Mohammed Abdalla received a commemorative key from UNDP Acting Deputy Country Director, Yakub Beris, to mark the successful delivery of more than 60 health facilities constructed through the Global Fund grant for combating HIV/AIDS in Sudan, at the handover ceremony held this morning in the new central warehouse for storage of drugs, in Khartoum North.

    The Government of Germany and UNDP Sign a 3.5 million Euro agreement to create employment opportunities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip

    Jerusalem - As part of its continuing effort to tackle unemployment in the occupied Palestinian territory, the Government of Germany, through its Development Bank (KFW), and the United Nations Development Programme signed an agreement in the amount of 3.5 million Euros on Wednesday May 18, 2011 in Ramallah. Mr. Marc Engelhardt, Head of KfW in the occupied Palestinian territory and Mr. Frode Mauring, UNDP Special Representative of the Administrator attended the ceremony.

    UNDP Jordan marks its first social media initiative

    Last week marked UNDP Jordan’s first social media initiative with 66 participants representing five national partners attending the “Social Media Week”. The initiative included daily sessions to introduce targeted national partners of the Governance Portfolio to social media concepts, platforms, strategic approaches and organizational and content policies each in their specific context. As the Country Office itself is planning to develop its social media plan, a learning session for UNDP Country Office and project staff on social media was delivered early in the Week.

    Community security initiatives take off in Blue Nile State

    Damazine. On Sunday May 8th, the Sudanese Development Initiative (SUDIA), with the support of the Joint DDR Commission (JDDRC) and the UNDP, officially launched two pilot social reintegration projects, which will be implemented in Blue Nile State. The launch took place in Damazine town, and was attended by more than 30 participants, including representatives from the state government, UN agencies, the media, and civil society.

    Arab States can reap significant benefits from international experience in electoral assistance

    Cairo– The UNDP “Community of Practice on Electoral Assistance for the Arab Region,” which opened today in Cairo, highlighted two factors of central importance in assisting the conduct of fair and transparent elections in countries which are undergoing major transformations towards democracy: the exchange of experience and coordination between international organizations actively involved in electoral assistance in the region, and understanding mechanisms employed in other countries to guarantee electoral credibility.

    Moving ahead to improve lives of Iraqis affected by landmines

    Baghdad – To commemorate Global Mine Action Day, the Iraqi Ministry of Environment and the United Nations in Iraq held today a press conference on mine action in Iraq at the UNAMI Headquarters in Baghdad. Representatives of national, regional and international media outlets in Iraq listened and interacted with the Deputy Minister of Environment, Dr Kamal Latif, the Head of Humanitarian and Development Office at UNAMI, Mr. Daniel Augstburger, and Major General Hadi Athab, Director of Military Engineering at the Ministry of Defence, who briefed them on Iraq’s continued commitment to building awareness on the dangers of landmines and clearing the country from explosive remnants of war, while supporting the victims who have been affected by them.

    Community leaders discuss small arms and light weapons control in Red Sea State, Port Sudan

    Port Sudan, Today, the North Sudan DDR Commission (NSDDRC) and the Ministry of Interior, with support from the UNDP- DDR program, opened a two-day small arms and light weapons (SALW) sensitization workshop in Red Sea State, Port Sudan City. This two-day workshop aims to raise awareness at the state and locality level on the dangers of small arms and their proliferation, and discuss small arms control measures that are acceptable to communities. Representatives from state government and ministries as well as localities are taking part in the workshop, which welcomed over 100 participants on its first day.

    Ex-combatants and community members in Southern Kordofan jointly acquire new skills

    Kadugli– Today, the Southern Kordofan state government, the UNDP and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) officially launched a vocational training programme for ex-combatants and community members in the state. The programme will support a total of 215 participants who will be trained over a period of six-months. This training is an integral component of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) programme, and aims to facilitate and accelerate the economic and social reintegration of ex-combatants and women associated with armed forces into society.

    UNDP support to tribal elders’ conclave boosts peace efforts in South Kordofan

    Kadugli, The Southern Kordofan Reconciliation and Peaceful Coexistence Mechanism (RPCM) and UNDP’s Crisis and Recovery Mapping and Analysis (CRMA) and Conflict Reduction Programme (CRP)-supported community interaction in Al Buram locality has enabled the Shatt Nuba and Rawawga Hawazma tribes to jointly decide on interventions for consolidation of peace and reconciliation. Efforts to bring the two communities together were part of a two-day workshop that concluded , here today.
