International Volunteer Day celebrations
Date: 5 December 2013
Location: Egypt, Jordan,Morocco,Tunisia,Yemen
On International Volunteer Day (IVD) 2013, we not only celebrate and recognize volunteerism in all its facets – but pay special tribute to the contribution of youth volunteers in global peace and sustainable human development. For IVD 2013 we celebrate globally that young people act as the agents of change in their communities. On 5 December, 2013 join us in recognizing all volunteers' commitment and applaud hundreds of millions of people who volunteer to make the world a better place.
In the Arab region, the spirit of volunteerism is very present, thanks to the energy of millions of young people who want to make a difference. Through the regional project Arab Youth Volunteering for a Better Future, the United Nations Volunteer (UNV) programme aims to support youth to effectively engage in the development processes of their countries through volunteerism.
For this, and in celebration of this important day, the following activities will be taking place in the project’s target countries: Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia and Yemen:
Cairo will be the setting for the country’s celebration of youth volunteers. With the participation of UNDP Egypt, UNWomen, Plan International, Vodafone Egypt and Microsoft, an open day will be organized in the emblematic Cairo Opera House. The event will be opened by UN Resident Coordinator, Anita Nirody, and invites all those interested to join the celebration.
