"Development for Beirut Region" Workshop

17 Oct 2012

On 17 October 2012, the Lebanese parliament in collaboration with UNDP –parliament project organized a workshop entitled “Development for Beirut Region” at the Lebanese Parliament in the presence of the MPs representing the region: Tammam Salam, Imad Al-Hout, Mohamed kabanai, Atef Majdalani, Amar Houri, Michele Feraoun, Arthur Nazarian, Serge Toursarkisian and representatives from Ministries, public administration, local and international organizations, municipalities and Makhateer (mayors).

During the opening session, MP Mohamed Kabani pointed in his speech that “Beirut lost its first regional role of international organizations and major companies during the war and there is a big need to restore this role, through the development of the necessary infrastructure and institutions that provide telecommunications services, electricity, water, air and land transport.

Mr. Luca Renda, UNDP Country Director stressed on the importance of this workshop “not only because Beirut is the capital city of Lebanon with over a million citizens living inside the city, but also because of the linages from an urban planning perspective to many adjacent areas that form greater Beirut Area, which probably has two third of the Lebanese population living inside this area.”

He added “I also seize this opportunity to talk about a problem and a challenge that faces us everywhere in Lebanon as development practitioners but especially at the national level and in Beirut as planning for development requires accurate and reliable statistics and data. Lebanon is, unfortunately, among a minority of countries that do not have unified reliable and official statistics in many areas.”

After that, presentations on demographic, economic and social development in Beirut were elaborated during the sessions.

The session will be followed by another one on 24 October 2012 and will include presentations on Social, cultural, health and tourism for the ministries concerned.
