Supporting the secretariat of the council of representatives to better serve the Iraqi people
By: Richard Cox, UNDP Iraq
UNDP Iraq hosted and facilitated a strategic planning workshop for a delegation of 25 senior members of the Secretariat of the Council of Representatives under the leadership of the Council’s Secretary General.
The workshop defined the vision, mission statement and high-level strategic objectives of the Secretariat to serve the Members of Parliament more effectively. Furthermore, it identified stakeholders for its various activities and set out professional and ethical core values to abide by. This work will contribute to the overarching strategic plan which will be finalised before the end of 2012.
The workshop is part of UNDP’s wider support to strengthen the overall effectiveness of the Iraqi Parliament. In cooperation with the Secretariat, these activities aim to reinforce the oversight of Parliamentary Committees and ensure greater outreach capacities for Committees, as well as individual Members of Parliament.
This workshop comes in follow up to consultations held in December last year. They covered a series of topics including improving the role of the Parliamentary administration, enhancing support to parliamentary committees and improving dialogue with Iraqi citizens to ensure parliament reflects the opinions and concerns of citizens and how to best represent them.
In addition, UNDP Iraq plans to support the Council of Representatives in strengthening the role of women at all levels of parliamentary activity and ensure that the Council of Representatives interacts successfully with Iraqi youth, mainly by working with the Youth Parliament.
