UNDP present on the ground in Lebanese American University and Beirut Arab University

Lebanon - Eighteen UN agencies gathered on the 27th of April at the Lebanese American University (LAU) Beirut Campus for the LAU–UN Day to inform students about their missions, mandates and goals. 

Held under the slogan “UN4U”, The LAU-UN Day is an event organized by the LAU and the United Nations Information Centre in Beirut (UNIC) where the United Nations agencies working in Lebanon participated and explained to student the role of the UN in general and its activities in Lebanon in particular. 

This is the First LAU-UN Day, said Ms.Marita Kassis, member of LAU’s outreach and civic engagement unit that organized the event, adding that this fair aims at shedding the light on the social, cultural, and humanitarian works of the United Nations and not only on the political side.
 
During this day, students and teachers informally interacted with UN Staff standing at their booths and were eager to know more about the UN system in Lebanon. 

Myriam Aziz, an International affairs student at LAU explained that she benefited a lot from this day because she got the opportunity to ask about internship and volunteering opportunities inside the UN.

On the same day, the students were able to discover the work and achievements of each UN agencies working in Lebanon.

In a booth shared with its NGO partner, ANND, The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) displayed its various publications, flyers and posters for distribution. Teachers and students were very interested in the Global, Arab and National Human Development Reports also displayed during this event. To better understand the work of UNDP in Lebanon, its main pillars, and numerous projects, UNDP showed several TV spots and documentaries. 

One week later, UNDP participated in the NGO Fair organized by the Human Rights Center in the Beirut Arab University. Professors and students of the Beirut Arab University shared concerns, questions and comments with UNDP Staff present at the booth decorated with colorful posters, UNDP banners and numerous publications displayed to help the students discover more about the work of the UNDP in Lebanon.

“The Human Rights Center in BAU is organizing this NGO Fair for the second consecutive year. This year’s event was highlighted by the presence of the UNDP and OHCHR as international organizations advocating for Human Rights” said Mr. Omar Houri, Head of Human Rights Center in the Arab Beirut University. 

Mr. Houri added that this fair aims at introducing the work of UNDP and numerous NGOs providing the students with the right platform to know more about civil society and international organizations. 

Wassim Samer, BAU student was impressed by the work of the UNDP in Lebanon, especially in the social and local development portfolio in different regions of the country. 

Youth is considered one of the main cross cutting themes of UNDP which focuses on youth activities and youth mobilization.
