Inauguration of photovoltaic system for lighting in Public schools

On Thursday May 5th, 2011 the Country Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Demonstration Project for the Recovery of Lebanon (CEDRO), which is a UNDP-managed project funded by the Government of Spain through the Lebanon Recovery Fund, is organizing the inauguration of “photovoltaic systems for lighting in public schools in Lebanon” at the public school of Kfour, in the South, at 11am.

This event is in collaboration with the ministries of Energy & Water and Education & Higher Education. The UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Robert Watkins and Spain’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Mr. Juan Carlos Gafo will attend the ceremony along regional parliamentarians, public school directors and 300 public school students from the south.

The ceremony will start with a presentation of CEDRO’s achievements and will be followed by opening speeches and brief welcome notes. Afterwards, all the attendees will visit the school to look at the PV system installed. These systems are to provide the schools with energy independence, both from the diesel generators used for back-up installation and saving on the EDL (Electricity of Lebanon) electricity bill. They are used to light up the classrooms and hallways, run photocopy machines and from time to time, to run the computer systems. The CEDRO project has to date installed over 25 PV systems (of 40 kWp), mostly in public schools such as this one in Kfour and plans to install an additional 36 PV systems (with 53 kWp of power) in 2011 in different schools throughout the country.

The event will be run in parallel to a number of awareness raising activities that will take place in Kfour public schools including hands-on activities for renewable energy awareness such as the construction of houses and solar systems with the help of the Little Engineer programme. There will also be a play for the children, which will tackle in humoristic way energy conservation and renewable energy matters, and their relationship with climate change.
