BAGHDAD - In a report published today, the Government of Iraq and the United Nations presented the progress made in a number of areas towards achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Iraq. These areas are: reducing hunger and child mortality and promoting gender equality. However, there is slower progress reported in other crucial areas: enrolment in primary education, unemployment and access to safe and reliable water and sanitation services.

The Kingdom of Bahrain re-confirmed its commitment to the protection of human rights by hosting a two-day workshop on Safeguards against Torture and Other Ill-treatments. The aim of the workshop was to deepen the understanding and functioning of safeguards against torture as they are enshrined in international law and to encourage participants to reflect on national law and practice in the light of these international standards.

Supporting the development of the national childhood strategy and the national strategy for persons with disabilities for the Kingdom of Bahrain
The Ministry of Social Development and UNDP signed a project document today to develop two national strategies; the National Childhood Strategy and the National Strategy for Persons with Disabilities. The agreement, which comes as a result of thorough discussions with different stakeholders, including government and non-government institutions, was signed by H.E. Dr. Fatima Al Balooshi, Minister of Social Development and Mr. Sayed Aqa, UNDP Resident Representative in Bahrain at a formal ceremony at the Ministry of Social Development premises. Also present at the signing ceremony were representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Finance.

The second phase of the joint UNDP and Ministry of Industry and Commerce Globalization Programme entitled: ‘Support to Enhancing Institutional Capacity for Global Economic Environment and Governance’. The Programme Document was signed by H.E. Dr. Hassan Fakhro, Minister of Industry and Commerce and Mr. Sayed Aqa, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative at a ceremony held at the Ministry’s premises.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator and United Nations Development Group (UNDG) Chair Helen Clark arrives in Bahrain to take part in the annual regional meeting of the UNDP Resident Representatives in Arab countries which is being hosted by Bahrain under the theme ‘Delivering Results that Count’. The UNDP official was received at the airport by the Prime Minister’s Advisor for Economic Affairs Abdullah bin Hassan Saif, Undersecretary for International Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Karim Ibrahim Al Shaker, and UN officials from the Kingdom.

UNDP Administrator Helen Clark met with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the UN, H.E. Mr. Tawfeeq Almansoor, on Tuesday, 30th March 2010. During their meeting, the Ambassador presented the Administrator with a check of US$ 1 million as Bahrain´s contribution to recovery efforts in Haiti.

Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan – Every year an unknown number of Iraqis gets killed or maimed due to landmines and unexploded remnants of war, as their country is among the most contaminated with unexploded ordnance. One of the victims is Yahya Muhammed Taha, who stepped on a landmine and lost his left leg at the age of 23, seven years ago.

UNDP directed US$579 million in human development aid to the Arab region in 2008, an increase of 21 percent from the year before in a region that is experiencing a number of conflict and post-conflict recovery situations. Indeed, the bulk of the funds, 70 percent, went toward programmes in Iraq, Sudan, Somalia and Palestine supporting the rehabilitation of socioeconomic infrastructure and the creation of temporary employment for the millions of people who suffered devastating losses as a result of violent conflict.

On 12 August, a jubilant mood took over the Somali towns of Garowe and Hargeisa as groups of young people marched along the streets in celebration of International Youth Day. They held aloft banners bearing messages from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as loudspeakers everywhere excitedly announced community football matches later in the day. The events, organized by UNDP along with the UN Population Fund, mark the beginning of a sustained advocacy campaign promoting the MDGs and poverty reduction in Somalia.

The 2009 Lebanese elections will be different from the previous parliamentary elections. This year, several changes were made concerning the electoral procedures such as redrawing of the electoral district, holding the elections in all the districts at the same day and using the National ID cards instead of voter cards. These changes were the outcome of the new electoral law that was enacted on October 2008 in the framework of the reconciliation process following the Doha agreement.
