    Distribution of equipment and fire fighting trucks to the civil defense

    Under the patronage and in the presence of H.E. Minister of Interior and Municipalities Me. Ziad Baroud, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is organizing a ceremony to distribute certificates to the civil defense trainees on the occasion of the completion of the second phase of the first stage of the “search and rescue” training. The ceremony will take place on Friday 12th of March at 9:45am at the civil defense premises in Tehwita where search and rescue equipments and fire fighting trucks will be delivered.

    Special Representative for Iraq Congratulates Iraqis on Elections

    Baghdad – I congratulate the more than 12 million Iraqis who went to the polls, some braving insecurity, to cast their ballots for a better future, marking the historic character of election day. This turnout was beyond the expectations of many. I commend the IHEC Board of Commissioners and the more than 300,000 Iraqis engaged by IHEC, for their efforts to conduct elections in a well organized and professional fashion.     UNDP helps mine victims in Iraqi Kurdistan become independent

    Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan – Every year an unknown number of Iraqis gets killed or maimed due to landmines and unexploded remnants of war, as their country is among the most contaminated with unexploded ordnance. One of the victims is Yahya Muhammed Taha, who stepped on a landmine and lost his left leg at the age of 23, seven years ago.

    UNDP human development initiatives in the Arab World

    UNDP directed US$579 million in human development aid to the Arab region in 2008, an increase of 21 percent from the year before in a region that is experiencing a number of conflict and post-conflict recovery situations. Indeed, the bulk of the funds, 70 percent, went toward programmes in Iraq, Sudan, Somalia and Palestine supporting the rehabilitation of socioeconomic infrastructure and the creation of temporary employment for the millions of people who suffered devastating losses as a result of violent conflict.

    Millennium Development campaign kicks off in Somalia

    On 12 August, a jubilant mood took over the Somali towns of Garowe and Hargeisa as groups of young people marched along the streets in celebration of International Youth Day. They held aloft banners bearing messages from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as loudspeakers everywhere excitedly announced community football matches later in the day. The events, organized by UNDP along with the UN Population Fund, mark the beginning of a sustained advocacy campaign promoting the MDGs and poverty reduction in Somalia.
