Sima Bahous: How neighbouring countries are responding to the Syria crisis: resilience, stabilization and solidarity
I am pleased to welcome you to this important event in my capacity as Chair of Arab States/Middle East and North Africa Regional United Nations Development Group (R-UNDG). Today we will be presented with an overview of the National Response Plans of the Governments of Jordan and Lebanon to the Syrian refugee crisis, a crisis that continues to become more and more pronounced as a story of unspeakable human tragedy.
Throughout the Middle East, souqs, or markets, have historically been the centre of a city’s culture and livelihood. Centuries of use, however, have taken their toll on many of these traditional marketplaces in the region, from crumbling walls and falling ceilings to fewer sellers and goods.
Damascus - A project aimed at up scaling the developing process of the “Al-Ghab” region has been signed at the State Planning Commission as a joint collaboration between the State Planning Commission (SPC), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Food and Agriculture organization (FAO).

As Syrian Refugees in Lebanon Reach the One Million Mark, UNDP and the UK Department for International Development Boost Cooperation in Support of Host Communities
New York –Today according to UNHCR estimates the number of refugees who have fled Syria and registered in Lebanon has surpassed the milestone of one million, leaving the country to Syria’s west with the highest population of refugees-per-capita worldwide.
Amman - The Host Communities Support Platform (HCSP), chaired by the Minister of Planning, H.E. Dr. Ibrahim Saif convened a meeting on Thursday 9th January 2014 to endorse the Government’s National Resilience Plan (NRP). The NRP provides a strategic framework for Jordan’s response to the impact of the Syria crisis, with a focus on supporting Jordanian host communities in the most affected areas of the Kingdom.
