The UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Marta Ruedas, the Ambassador of the Switzerland in Lebanon, H.E. Ms. Ruth Flint and the LPDC President Me. Maya Majzoub will sign an Agreement to support the UNDP project “Support to the Lebanese Palestinian Dialogue Committee” funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) for a total amount of 300 thousand dollars. The ceremony will take place on Friday 26th of November at 9:30am at the Swiss Embassy premises in Ashrafieh (Bourj El Ghazal building, 14th floor).

Damascus-Syria- Under the Patronage of H.E. Mrs. Lamia Marai Aasi, Minister of Economy and Trade, “The Comprehensive Guide to WTO Agreements” and the Website of World Trade Organization Directorate of the Ministry of Economy and Trade will be launched on the 25th of November 2010. The two activities are achieved within the framework of the ongoing project “Trade Policy Reform and WTO Pre-Accession”; which is being implemented in cooperation between the Ministry of Economy and Trade (MOET) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Syria.

OXFAM GB and UNDP Yemen gender and economic empowerment project will collaborate to promote economic empowerment in Hadramout governorate for women and youth
Sana’a - A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today to “collaborate for promoting women’s economic empowerment in Hadramout governorate”. The MoU between the UNDP Gender and Economic Empowerment Project (GEE) and OXFAM GB envisages the implementation of activities and actions to lay the foundations of partnership between UNDP and OXFAM GB relevant projects.

Jericho – Today the Jericho community marks an important step as they inaugurate a multipurpose hall at Terra Santa School. The project implemented in coordination with the Custodia Di Terra Sant by UNDP/PAPP, with a budget of US$495,022, is part of the Government of Italy’s support to the development of the education sector in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Under the patronage and in the presence of H.E Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Hussein Haj Hassan, UNDP-ART GOLD Lebanon (AGL) hosted the Fourth Mediterranean Beekeeping Forum in Beirut, Lebanon on November 11th and 12th, 2010. The Forum was initially established in Foligno, Italy in 2007 in collaboration with the Association of Umbrian Beekeepers (APAU), FELCOS Umbria, Foligno Municipality and ART Initiative.

Iraq - Every year hundreds of Iraqis are killed or maimed by cluster munitions and landmines, due to Iraq’s contamination of millions of explosive remnants of war (ERW). According to Iraqi figures, the contamination claimed 14,000 victims between 1991 and 2007, while in the three Kurdish governorates the estimated number of victims (both injuries and deaths) was 8,174 between 1991 and 2008.

Damazine, Today, the Joint DDR Commission (JDDRC) in Blue Nile State opened a threeday workshop on Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) and Community Security and Arms Control (CSAC). The workshop was attended by 50 community leaders from six localities in Blue Nile State, and took place at the Workers Union Hall, in Damazine. Other participants included representatives from State Ministries, local government, the media, the UNDP, UNMIS and international organizations.

Rabat, Morocco ― The Arab Climate Resilience Initiative Regional Forum opened here today, bringing together high-level officials from over fifteen Arab countries to build consensus around a future course of action on climate change in the Arab region. Over 100 participants are in attendance, including government officials, and representatives from regional organizations, the private sector, environmental organizations, research centers and multilateral institutions. The Forum is co-organized by UNDP and the Secretariat of State in Charge of Water and the Environment of the Government of Morocco.

UNDP hosts mine action lessons learned workshop “strong commitment needed to make Sudan free of landmines by 2014”
Khartoum – The landmines and Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) clearance assets developed in the form of Joint Integrated Demining Units have cleared 446 kilometre-long Babanusa-Wau railway line and more than 1,650 km of high priority roads in central and Eastern states of the country. This was stated at the Mine Action Capacity Development Lessons Learned Workshop, held here today. The aim of the workshop was to review and capture lessons learned in the field of mine action capacity development and come up with recommendations and priorities for future mine action capacity needs.

Khartoum – Sudan’s progress towards achieving the globally agreed Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) has been stalled due to the detrimental effects of past and continuing armed conflict in parts of the country. Significant financial and human resources needed to support government authority have caused a reduction or suspension of expenditure increases on essential or basic services to people.

Gaza – As a result of a recent UNDP social assessment survey, conducted in partnership with Gaza civil society organizations, to identify post conflict needs of different groups, including women, following the December 2008 war on Gaza, the United Nations Development Programme /Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People signed an agreement with four Women NGOs in the Gaza Strip to implement a US$350,000 project funded by the Government of Canada through CIDA.

Prime Minister Salam Fayyad inaugurates the Jericho Agro-Industrial Road project funded by the government of Japan and implemented by UNDP
Jerusalem– A new road connecting the Jericho wholesale market and the future agro industrial zone was inaugurated today in Jericho in addition to the laying of a cornerstone for the future site of the Jericho Agro-Industrial Park (JAIP). The projects funded by the Government of Japan in the amount of US$ 3.1 million are slated to support the (JAIP) project.

Cairo – This week, Egypt presented its report on the 2010 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), entitled: Egypt’s Progress Towards Achieving the MDGs 2010 at the MDGs Review Summit convening at the United Nations General Assembly. The heads of State and Government, have gathered at the UN Headquarters in New York from 20 to 22 September 2010 to reaffirm their commitment to work together for a better world. With only five years left until the 2015 deadline to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on world leaders to attend the summit to accelerate progress towards the MDGs.
