European Commission and UNDP to a develop a regional Crisis Response Centre at the League of Arab States
he European Commission has signed an agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to set up a regional Crisis Response Centre and Warning System at the League of Arab States. The Centre aims strengthening the capacities of the Arab region in crisis prevention and response through enhanced cooperation between the Secretariat General of the League of Arab States (SGLAS), the European Commission (EC) and the UNDP.

The Arab region has achieved progress in many MDGs, including significant strides in health and education, says a recently launched UN Report. However, there have been setbacks and constraints attributable to several factors, including the relatively poor economic performance in the 1990s and early 2000s, inadequate financing of social policies, and increasing political tensions and conflicts.

On the occasion of Human Rights Day, H.E. Dr. Nezar Al Baharna, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, launched the Government of Bahrain Report entitled “Foreign Workers and Labour Conditions in Bahrain”. The report details some of the issues related to foreign workers in the Kingdom, such as recruitment fees, wages, excessive work, passport and mobility as well as other forms of physical and psychological abuse. It further features solutions and protections currently available in the Kingdom, as well as future pledges for further improving working and living conditions of foreign workers in Bahrain. The Report was prepared in joint consultation with the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, LMRA and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the support of UNDP within the framework of the UPR Project.

Kuwait – The International Donors and Investors Conference on East Sudan under the patronage of His Highness the Esteemed Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah and by the Prime Minister of Kuwait, H.H Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, ended this morning. The grand total of pledges and planned contributions exceeds 3 billion US dollars, including the commitment from the Government of Sudan.

Kuwait – The International Donors and Investors Conference for East Sudan inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Kuwait, H.H Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, commenced this morning. In his opening speech the Prime Minister said, the main interest of the participating countries is to “aid the brotherly nation of Sudan in resolving the conflicts and challenges that it is facing at present and move forward towards development under the umbrella of peace and security”. The Government of Sudan out of their national commitment to improve conditions in eastern Sudan, came to the table with a pledge of 1,572, 000,000 US dollars. A National Symposium on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was held in joint cooperation between the Ministry of Social Development, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the National Committee for Disabled Persons Affairs. The symposium was convened to coincide with the Kingdom's celebrations of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd.

The UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Marta Ruedas, the Ambassador of the Switzerland in Lebanon, H.E. Ms. Ruth Flint and the LPDC President Me. Maya Majzoub will sign an Agreement to support the UNDP project “Support to the Lebanese Palestinian Dialogue Committee” funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) for a total amount of 300 thousand dollars. The ceremony will take place on Friday 26th of November at 9:30am at the Swiss Embassy premises in Ashrafieh (Bourj El Ghazal building, 14th floor).

OXFAM GB and UNDP Yemen gender and economic empowerment project will collaborate to promote economic empowerment in Hadramout governorate for women and youth
Sana’a - A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today to “collaborate for promoting women’s economic empowerment in Hadramout governorate”. The MoU between the UNDP Gender and Economic Empowerment Project (GEE) and OXFAM GB envisages the implementation of activities and actions to lay the foundations of partnership between UNDP and OXFAM GB relevant projects.

Jericho – Today the Jericho community marks an important step as they inaugurate a multipurpose hall at Terra Santa School. The project implemented in coordination with the Custodia Di Terra Sant by UNDP/PAPP, with a budget of US$495,022, is part of the Government of Italy’s support to the development of the education sector in the occupied Palestinian territory.

The Forum was initially established in Foligno, Italy in 2007 in collaboration with the Association of Umbrian Beekeepers (APAU), FELCOS Umbria, Foligno Municipality and ART Initiative.

Iraq - Every year hundreds of Iraqis are killed or maimed by cluster munitions and landmines, due to Iraq’s contamination of millions of explosive remnants of war (ERW). According to Iraqi figures, the contamination claimed 14,000 victims between 1991 and 2007, while in the three Kurdish governorates the estimated number of victims (both injuries and deaths) was 8,174 between 1991 and 2008.
