“Why Tackling Climate Change Matters for Development” Lecture by Helen Clark, UNDP Administrator and UNDG Chair Co-organized by the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment & the Stanford Program in Human Biology Stanford, California, USA Thursday, 8 November 2012 Progress towards a new global climate agreement has been painfully slow. In my lecture today, I will talk about key issues at stake in the negotiations, and why concerted international action to tackle global warming matters so much to poor people and poor countries on the front lines of climate change.

I thank the World Affairs Council for inviting me to deliver this lecture as part of its ongoing mini-series: “Spotlight on Development Challenges”. As Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme, I find the topic of this lecture series and the Council’s interest in what the world might look like in 2050 particularly relevant to our work to help address one of humanity’s most pressing challenges: how to lift human development while staying within planetary boundaries.

It is also about creating the environment for a productive economy.

18 young Iraqis living in Jordan participated in a focus group sponsored by UNDP Iraq. The discussions came in support to the work on the National Human Development Report which focuses on challenges faced by Iraqi youth. The meeting helped the report’s researchers better understand reasons behind young Iraqis leaving their homeland and the challenges they face in Jordan; it allowed these young Iraqis to share their perceptions and feelings towards Iraq.

The UN Special Representative distributes certificates to 250 municipalities that participated in the World Disaster Risk Reduction Campaign
The National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS), in partnership with the United Nations and the Disaster Risk Reduction unit at the Prime Minister’s office, organized today, at the Grand Serail, a certificate distribution ceremony to 250 municipalities approximately and union in Lebanon which joined the World Disaster Campaign “My City is Getting Ready”.

On 17 October 2012, the Lebanese parliament in collaboration with UNDP –parliament project organized a workshop entitled “Development for Beirut Region” at the Lebanese Parliament in the presence of the MPs representing the region: Tammam Salam, Imad Al-Hout, Mohamed kabanai, Atef Majdalani, Amar Houri, Michele Feraoun, Arthur Nazarian, Serge Toursarkisian and representatives from Ministries, public administration, local and international organizations, municipalities and Makhateer (mayors).
