In Morocco as elsewhere, women traditionally lack legal protection. When marriage ends through death, divorce or other estrangement, women often lose their land, homes and other property. Strengthening their legal status is a key step toward an environment that empowers women, taking children’s rights into account. more

Yemen

Economic Diversification Support Programme in Yemen (2009)

UNDP is supporting the Government of Yemen to diversify its economy, and minimize dependence on oil. This will be addressed through the newly launched Economic Diversification Support Programme (EDSP). The EDSP addresses a central concern in Yemen's Strategic Vision 2025 and Third Five-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan for Poverty Reduction (2006-2010), which call for economic diversification by promoting equitable, job-creating growth in four promising sectors: agriculture, fisheries, industry and trade, and tourism. more

Employment Generation for Early Recovery in Somalia (2009)

The EGER project addresses the urgent need for income generation and job creation in Somalia through community based approaches. It aims to provide more knowledge to local communities towards contributing to peace building, reconciliation and socio-economic development. The project seeks to generate employment opportunities and income for vulnerable populations in Somalia, particularly women, marginalized groups and youth. This is implemented through labor intensive rehabilitation of productive and basic social infrastructure such as irrigation canals, garbage collection, environmental health, access roads, market places, and public buildings. more

Deprived Families Economic Empowerment Programme in oPt (2006)

This poverty reduction programme is expected to help 12,000 families in oPt through access to promotional social safety net activities’ packages and financial services. In addition, the programme will enhance the capacity and effectiveness of a number of microfinance institutions throughout the West Bank and Gaza to provide credit facilities for small scale entrepreneurs. more

Employment Generation Programme (EGP) in oPt (2006)

Through this programme, over €71 million have been allocated by the German Government, through its development bank, KfW, for the implementation of 456 small-scale infrastructure projects in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Projects include construction of roads, water networks, stadiums, community service building, woman and youth centers, clinics, etc. In addition, over 700,000 short-term workdays have been generated as well as numerous permanent job opportunities. more

Empowering & Connecting the Community through ICT in Egypt (2007)

The objective of this project is to strengthen the efforts of the government of Egypt in cooperation with various stakeholders in the process of building the nation’s information society. The project would help produce the following outputs: a) universal access policies and strategies developed and upgraded, b) ICT applications supported; c) innovation enhanced, d) legal and regulatory enabling environment created, e) human resources training and development supported, and, f) knowledge sharing and internal management support systems established more

Dahshour Community Development in Egypt (2009)

The Joint Programme seeks to support the reduction of human development disparities, with special reference to addressing the gender gap and achieving environmental sustainability. Dahshour project has served a total of 4417 women in the Dahshour community providing them with training to build their capacity at the institutional local and national level. The project has also provided women with awareness raising workshops and engaged them in dialogues for information sharing. The project has created socioeconomic opportunities for 275 women, in addition the project has also supported women in strengthening cultural/community centers and museums. more

Gender and Economic Empowerment Project in Yemen (2010)

The project contributes to the economic and social empowerment of women and youth, improved livelihoods, rights, and gender sensitive policy support. It aims to empower socially and economically disadvantaged women and youth -the primary beneficiaries to be empowered are some 1,200 economically and socially disadvantaged women and youth (70 percent women and 30 percent male youth respectively- in market oriented technical, entrepreneurial and managerial skills, confidence building and empowering skills, necessary to improve their access to productive resources and sustainable earning potential more
