Helping Save Samoa’s Forests: UNDP Administrator and GEF Chief Executive meet a community on the frontlines

Faith leaders, government and civil society come together to uphold human rights and access to health for sexual minorities in South Asia
Religious leaders and faith-based organizations have a crucial role to play in upholding the human rights of sexual minorities and ensuring appropriate and accessible health services, including for men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people, participants affirmed at a South Asia Regional Consultation on Faith, Cultural Diversity, Access to Health and HIV this past week in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Tackling HIV requires courageous and committed policy-makers and law-makers said the UN’s development chief at the 20th International AIDS Conference. “Parliamentarians have an indispensable role to play in building the coalitions for action to change bad laws which entrench exclusion, and to ensure that services are available to risk groups often shunned by society," said United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Helen Clark. “You can also advocate for gender equality, women’s empowerment, and action against sexual and gender-based violence to lower the disproportionate risk of HIV infection faced by women and girls.”

Groundbreaking research on sex worker safety and security receives award at International AIDS Conference
An unprecedented research project, Sex Work and Violence: Understanding Factors for Safety and Protection, received the first Robert Carr Research Award at the 20th International AIDS Conference, in Melbourne, Australia. The award was established in honor of Dr. Robert Carr, who advocated for human rights as central to the response to the HIV epidemic.
