Sub-Saharan Africa is UNDP's largest programme region. UNDP operates in 46 countries, operates a budget of around 1 billion dollars and has a presence of about 4,500 staff in New York and on the ground.

Our strategic initiatives include: supporting Africa to develop its position on the post-2015 agenda, helping countries to use extractives industries for development, boosting women's empowerment and helping vulnerable regions to achieve higher levels of sustainable development.

In 2013 and 2014, UNDP provided a wide range of services to the region, from supporting crisis countries to facilitating access to sustainable energy in rural areas.

Looking ahead, UNDP's Regional Bureau for Africa will focus its support on completing the job of the MDGs while preparing to operationalize the Common African Position on the post-2015 Agenda.
