The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and CNH Industrial, a leading global producer of agricultural and construction equipment, trucks and powertrain, launched a partnership in which CNH Industrial will provide free construction equipment and tractors during the extensive cleanup and recovery of the communities devastated by Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).

“The private sector - from large multi-national companies to small enterprises - has an essential role to play in the recovery process after Typhoon Yolanda and I’m pleased to announce the partnership with the CNH Industrial,” said Toshihiro Tanaka, UNDP Philippines Country Director. “To build back sustainable and resilient communities will require an inclusive economic recovery driven by private enterprises that provide goods, services, jobs and income opportunities for the affected women and men, particularly the poor and vulnerable.”

CNH Industrial, working with its distributors in the Philippines, has made arrangements to provide a fleet of five machines, including skid steer and backhoe loaders and tractors fitted with dozing blades, all free of charge. The fleet is already in the Philippines and is being transported by the company’s local distributors to a UNDP project site in Tacloban. The equipment is supplied with operators, and will remain in the region to support relief operations as long as is needed.

The machines will be used initially to clear up debris in Tacloban, then will be moved to other devastated areas in the Leyte and Samar provinces. They will complement UNDP’s cash-for-work program, which provides a much needed source of income to the local population involved in removing debris and restoring livelihoods.

CNH Industrial has also launched an appeal for donations among its employees, pledging to match their contributions dollar-for-dollar to double the total funds raised in support of the emergency employment cash-for-work programme.

“We know how critical it is to provide shelter in safe and sanitary conditions in the aftermath of such a devastating disaster,” said Stefano Pampalone, CNH Industrial Chief Operating Officer for the Asia Pacific region. “The challenges in doing this are immense, and for this reason we have decided to channel our aid through the United Nations, to make a concerted and effective contribution to the international relief efforts with our equipment and drivers, and with the donation of the funds raised within our organization.”
