The United Nations (UN) Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights were today introduced to the Philippine private sector at a Forum on “Business and Human Rights”, held in the Makati Shangri-La Hotel. Hosted by the European Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines (ECCP), the Forum provided a platform for stakeholders to engage in dialogue on business and human rights, and to strengthen engagement towards the effective implementation of the Guiding Principles.

The N-Peace Awards shine a light on the tireless and often unrecognized efforts of both women and men who work with communities across Asia to achieve lasting peace. In its fourth year, N-Peace is excited to announce two new countries – Pakistan and Myanmar – and four new categories in the 2014 N-Peace Awards. The achievements of women at the grassroots level will continue to be celebrated with the ‘Untold stories – women transforming their communities’ awards that are selected online by the public. The four new categories will recognize work by the media, by a peace mobilizer at the national or regional level, by a young peacebuilder, and by an organization with a successful and innovative approach to community peacebuilding.

Aid agencies and the Philippine government are rushing to salvage the wood from some 15 million coconut trees that Typhoon Haiyan struck down in November 2013, but processing the tree debris before it rots is proving problematic, said the country’s top coconut authority.

UNDP honored eight Asian peace activists from conflict countries at its third annual N-Peace awards ceremony that was held in Bangkok, Thailand on 22 October. The N-Peace Awards spotlight women who demonstrate leadership in building peace, and men who work with women for gender equality. This high-level event concluded an annual regional campaign promoting over 90 peace advocates in Asia, whose personal stories inspired over 70,000 online supporters. Each of the winners has influenced peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan, Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Timor-Leste.

In a meeting with Sec. Corazon ‘Dinky’ Juliano-Soliman of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, United Nations (UN) Undersecretary General and Associate Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), expressed support for the government’s Conditional Cash Transfer Program (CCT), known locally as Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), and underscored its importance in breaking the cycle of poverty.
