UNREDD+ in collaboration with OCCD and WCS held REDD+Training Workshop in Manus
The PNG UNREDD+ Programme has held a 2 days REDD+ Training workshop in Lorengau, Manus Province on the 26-27th of November 2013.
The workshop was basically to validate the REDD+ training manual and in a way, awareness on Climate Change and REDD+ was carried out during the event. A total of 21 participants, mainly government officials from the provincial government, few from the local level government and resource owners attended the training.
The workshop was officially opened by the deputy governor for Manus Province John Popot. Mr Popot in his opening remarks highlighted the main events that affected Manus and elsewhere due to climate change and to show that they are aware of Climate Change and it’s impacts and will be willing to support adaptation and mitigation approaches, in this case, the REDD+ in the province.
UNREDD Consultant Tito Santos and the PNG REDD+ Team from Office of Climate Change and UNREDD delivered basic key messages on Climate Change and on REDD+.
A separate session was also spent on Free Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) following the draft FPIC Guidelines that was developed early this year. FPIC plays an important role as it ensures that all stakeholders concerned are informed prior to project implementation so they will be able to make informed choices.
The workshop proved worthwhile as stakeholders provided useful feedbacks during the two day workshop. These feedbacks will be used to finalize the draft REDD+ Manual and the draft FPIC Guidelines, and further used to design suitable awareness materials that will be delivered at the level where stakeholders can easily comprehend and understand.
The Wildlife Conservation Society office in Manus was very supportive and provided logistical support. They also did presentations during the workshop on their experience on REDD+ in Manus. OCCD and UNREDD are looking forward to working more closely with them and other stakeholders in future REDD+ programmes in Manus or elsewhere in PNG.
