Workshop held to discuss translation of wealth from natural resource extraction into sustainable human development
UNDP held a consultative workshop on human development in collaboration with the Government in Port Moresby to discuss discussed UNDP’s second National Human Development Report (NHDR) with the theme of ‘From Nature to People: Translating Resource Wealth into Sustainable Human Development’.

The PNG UNREDD+ Programme has held a 2 days REDD+ Training workshop in Lorengau, Manus Province on the 26-27th of November 2013. The workshop was basically to validate the REDD+ training manual and in a way, awareness on Climate Change and REDD+ was carried out during the event. A total of 21 participants, mainly government officials from the provincial government, few from the local level government and resource owners attended the training.

The National Economic and Fiscal Commission (NEFC) organized a series of regional workshop on the issue of “Intergovernmental Financing and Service Delivery”. The workshops carried out in Alotau from 22 to 24 May for the Southern region; in Lae from 4 to 6 June for the Momasse region and East New Britain from 18 to 20 June for the New Guinea Island region.

A contribution agreement has been signed between the EU and UNDP country office in PNG to implement a disaster risk management project titled “Reducing Risk and Building Community Resilience in Autonomous Region of Bougainville’. The project, with a budget of 540,000 Euros will be implemented over a period of 18 months.

The much talked Service Improvement Programs (DSIP/PSIP/LLGSIP) workshop got underway last week on the 17-18th April 2013 in Port Moresby at Hideaway Hotel. This workshop catered for stakeholders from Gulf and Central provinces and the National Capital District. An advance MapInfo training was conducted from the 8th – 19th April, 2013 under the “Disaster Risk Management Mainstreaming Program for Papua New Guinea” which is jointly implemented by UNDP, SOPAC and National Disaster Centre of Papua New Guinea. The main objective of the training was to provide participants with an overview of the potential benefits of using Geographical Information System (GIS) for disaster risk management and other potential applications.

The National Disaster Centre of Papua New Guinea has commenced the review of the existing Disaster Management Act with technical assistance from PNG Constitutional Law Reform Commission. Earlier UNDP assisted the Government of PNG strengthen the current DRM governance arrangements through revision of the National Disaster Risk Management Plan (NDRM Plan) that provided an institutional framework for DRM at all levels and paved the way for the revision of the existing DM legislation.

The PCaB Management visited the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (ARB) on the 25th – 26th Feb 2013. The travelling team included the Chief Technical Specialist Mr. Tito Balboa, National Program Coordinator Mr. Sam Erepan and ENB Provincial Support Advisor Mr. Geoffrey Kedeke. The trip was part of the awareness of the program to extend its technical support to the ARB in 2013 and onwards.

Excellence in Anti-Corruption Reporting Media Awards 2012 - Speech by Mr. David McLachlan-Karr, UNDP
Speaking on the occasion the RC remarked that corruption negatively impacts Papua New Guinea’s achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and all future work in equitable human development. As such, tackling corruption requires the strong commitment of government, but it also requires the support of civil society, including the media, to hold the government accountable for what it does on behalf of its citizens.

The RC remarked that UN is committed to working closely alongside the PNG Government, and with all our development partners, to find solutions and bring about sustainable development in PNG. In March this year, the UN agencies. funds and programmes in PNG signed the UN Development Assistance Framework UNDAF – the cornerstone of our collective work – for the period 2012-2015. The UNDAF is closely aligned with national development aspirations of the Medium-term Development Plan 2011-2015, the Development Strategic Plan and the Vision 2050.
