International Volunteer Day is a chance to thank the many individuals who act with this spirit of giving, and to encourage others to follow their example. When an earthquake destroys homes, volunteers prove that human solidarity is shatterproof. When looters aim for cultural property, volunteers safeguard community treasures. When development is lagging, volunteers help enable people to lift themselves out of poverty.

UNDP and ILO will impart employable skills training and employment facilitation to 200 women and men from North-Waziristan Agency who are temporarily residing in District Bannu due to ongoing ‘Operation Zarb-e-Azab’. An agreement between the two UN Agencies was signed today in Islamabad under UNDP’s ‘Community Resilience Project for NWA Displaced Families’.

The partnership between Germany and UNDP aims to help the provincial and district authorities to manage the emergency situation and prepare for the return and rehabilitation process. The measures will directly benefit the affected people by working with both the displaced persons and the host communities to improve social cohesion, access to basic services and increase livelihood opportunities. The acquired skills will make the displaced persons more self-reliant during the displacement period and give them the means to participate actively in the return and rehabilitation phase.

One young man and two women peace champions have been named among the winners of the 2014 N-Peace Awards, a prestigious prize administered by the United Nations Development Programme which recognizes the leadership role of women and peace advocates from six conflict-affected countries in Asia. This year was the first year that Pakistan has participated in the awards.

Women Parliamentarians agree on resolutions to improve leadership and political opportunities for women
National women’s commissions and caucuses across the region face similar challenges: limited human and financial resources, poor positioning and remaining at the lowest tier in the government hierarchy as well as struggling with development and welfare approach. Taking a regional approach to a pervasive problem, a two-day South Asian Regional Exchange meeting of parliamentarians, representatives of women’s caucuses, Women’s Ministries, Women’s Commissions, and Election Commissions, as well as UN agencies and international development partners was held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 15-17 July.

Speaking at the National Conference on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) held at Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services, Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reform Ahsan Iqbal announced that a grant of Rs 12.5 billion has been reserved in the 2014-15 Budget for community-led MDG initiatives.

National Consultation on Enhancing Women’s Participation in Politics – Making Quotas More Democratic
“We can only have an optimistic future scenario if women are given meaningful participation in legislative process. The collective wisdom of women parliamentarians would go a long way in addressing the women related issues”, stated Ms. Shaista Malik, Secretary of the Women Parliamentary Caucus at a seminar, “Women’s Participation in Politics – Making Quota Seats more Democratic”, held today by the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus and supported by UN Women and UNDP. She asked all political parties and politicians to join hands beyond political parties for the cause of empowering women.

A joint mission of international development partners visited Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province today. The mission to Swat, Buner and Peshawar provided development partners with an opportunity to engage with the communities, senior government officials and judicial staff to better understand the challenges for rule of law and to explore further opportunities for promoting peace and justice in the province. This is aligned with KP Government’s Strategic Partnership Development Framework which spells out joint commitments between the Government and international partners in accordance with the province’s development strategy. Rule of law is one of the priority components of the frame work.

Pakistan’s first Multi-dimensional Poverty Index initiated by the Government, UNDP, and Oxford University
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) congratulates the Federal and Provincial Governments for initiating the development of the Multi-dimensional Poverty Index (MPI) for Pakistan. This marks the beginning of the process of regularly calculating a new poverty index in Pakistan based on the global MPI methodology.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province UNDP will work on initiatives both at the institutional and community levels. The institutional support for the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa aims to bring long term changes in government rules, norms and structures - while the community development interventions aim to achieve immediate results in improving livelihoods and basic services for communities.

The Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform (MPDR) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched the fifth National MDG Report for Pakistan in Islamabad (MDGR). The report assesses progress towards achieving the MDGs, galvanising efforts for a final push for their achievement. The report records successes and challenges, and shares initial thoughts on the post-2015 development agenda for Pakistan. For the first time, this MDGR includes a review of sub-national and district level status and trends. UNDP Pakistan is also launching an Internet MDG monitor to make up-to-date information on the country’s MDG progress more widely available at www.mdg.undp.org.pk

To increase community resilience in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, FATA Disaster Management Authority and UNDP establish consortium of local civil society organizations
Due to insecurity, large-scale displacement of populations throughout FATA has led to millions of people at one time or another living in camps and spontaneous settlements. As of September 2013, 169,517 families have returned to their places of origin while 175,552 families are still living in camps or host communities. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the FATA Disaster Management Authority (FDMA) is helping to increase the resilience of the local communities and ensuring the sustainable return of crisis affected people to their homes.
