Disaster Risk Management Support

What is the Project About

The multitudes of natural and manmade disasters that have beset Pakistan since the previous decade have resulted in significant human, economic, environmental, and social losses. Pakistan has experienced recurring disasters in recent years with militancy in border areas and two consecutive floods. These disasters have claimed thousands of lives and affected some 37 million people. Moreover, the economy suffered from a massive financial strain.

Due to the crucial need for mainstreaming disaster risk reduction in Pakistan, the project was initiated to support the government and other stakeholders in drafting a five year programme under the UN One Programme-II (OP-II). The project aims to formulate a disaster risk management programme and provide operational and technical support to the national, provincial and district disaster management authorities. The project plan will focus on enhancing capacities for disaster risk reduction at the national and sub-national levels. The project aims to develop a more pragmatic approach for defining future courses of action in consultation with donors and international financial institutions. The project will also review and reflect upon the lessons learnt from the earlier interventions and review different assessments and reports, including the recently completed review of One UN Joint Programme on disaster risk management.
