Finland to provide Euro 5.4 million to strengthen rule of law and improve respect for human rights in Nepal
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have reached an agreement to implement a programme supporting the Supreme Court of Nepal and the Ministry of Law and Justice, Constituent Assembly and Parliamentary Affairs in minimizing impunity and protection and promotion of access to justice for thousands of poor and vulnerable people in Nepal.

UNDP hands over Anti-Retroviral Treatment facilities, adequate HIV/AIDS drugs and supplies to last until March 2014 to the government
UNDP has successfully concluded its $12 million partnership with the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria for Round 7 HIV grant that supported the National HIV/AIDS response in Nepal between 2008 and 2012—handing over Anti-Retroviral Treatment facilities and adequate HIV/AIDS drugs and supplies until March 2014. The facilities and supplies have been transferred to the National Centre for AIDS and STD Control (NCASC).

UN Assistant Secretary General and UNDP Regional Director completes his two-day Nepal visit; urges an end to political instability
Mr. Ajay Chhibber, UN Assistant Secretary General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for the Asia-Pacific concluded his two-day visit to Nepal urging the government leadership to find a way to end political instability before it begins to affect the entire economy. Expressing UNDP’s continued commitment to assist Nepal in its development efforts, he offered to do more—including pushing Nepal’s case for more concessional access to climate financing.

Today the Election Commission of Nepal (ECN), the European Commission (EC) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have embarked on a new partnership to strengthen the foundations of democracy in Nepal. A four year financing agreement was signed between the European Commission and Ministry of Finance to support the Election Commission’s ambitious institutional strengthening reform agenda that is built on its recent successes. A separate project implementation document was also signed between Election Commission and UNDP to implement the reform programme.

Africa’s urban population will increase from 414 million to over 1.2 billion by 2050 while that of Asia will soar from 1.9 billion to 3.3 billion. Both regions together will account for 86 per cent of all increase in the world’s urban population according to the 2011 Revision of the World Urbanization Prospects, launched by the United Nations today.

Environmental trends and deep inequalities threaten progress for the poor -Human Development Report 2011 launched
he new UNDP Human Development Report, “Equity and Sustainability: A Better Future for All,” was launched today by Hon’ble Deependra Bahadur Kshetry,Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission. The report places Nepal 157th out of 187 countries with an increase in the Human Development Index from 0.428 in 2010 to 0.458 in 2011. Nepal ranked 138 out of 169 countries in 2010.
