UNDP Administrator Helen Clark and Goodwill Ambassador Crown Prince Haakon of Norway wrapped up their joint official four day visit to Nepal with optimistic words for the next phase of country’s development. The new UNDP Human Development Report, “Equity and Sustainability: A Better Future for All,” was launched.UNDP Administrator Helen Clark addressed the Constituent Assembly Members. The Danida’s Human Rights and Good Governance Programme (HUGOU) and UNDP have signed a cost sharing agreement of US$ 230,000 for the construction of Electoral Asset Store (warehouse) facilities at the premises of the Election Commission Nepal through the UNDP Electoral Support Project (ESP). A Maternity Service Centre has been constructed in ward number 9 of Kamdi Village Development Committee in Banke, Nepalgunj with the support of Local Governance Community Development Programme (LGCDP). A transboundary meeting was organised between the senior officials of the Bardia National Park in Nepal and officials of Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in India to strengthen local level understanding and cooperation on conservation issues.Youth leaders from different political parties stressed the need of youth inclusion in the new Constitution during the panel discussion on ‘Youth and Democracy’ organised by the Center for Constitutional Dialogue (CCD), supported by UNDP’s Support to Participatory Constitution Building in Nepal (SPCBN)..... As a preparatory to the fourth Least Developed Countries (LDCs) conference in Istanbul, Nepal as the Chair of the LDCs held a one day workshop in Kathmandu, supported by the United Nations Information Centre. As part of the 10th Anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers (IYV +10) and coinciding with the Global Youth Service Day, more than 1000 youth volunteers gathered at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu to organise a cleaning campaign with the slogan ‘Change through Volunteerism’. The Centre for Constitutional Dialogue (CCD) and UNDP’s Support to Participatory Constitution Building in Nepal (SPCBN) project organised a discussion programme with the media to disseminate correct information and understanding about the basis for proposing 14 different federal states.... Renewable Energy for Rural Livelihood (RERL) programme has been launched. The National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) conducted a simulation exercise with the scenario of 7.2 magnitude earthquake to test the draft Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for response coordination at the national level. The event was supported by UNDP Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Programme (CDRMP). Political leaders get together to discuss Constitution

The United Nations Country Team (UNCT) in Nepal launched the first ever traineeship programme for candidates from socially excluded groups to create a diverse workforce as well as address the agenda of social exclusion in a pragmatic manner. Ministry of Local Development, some national and private media and UNDP team led by the Country Director Shoko Noda, visited eastern Nepal to get a closer understanding of the ongoing UNDP works at the field level and meet the stakeholders. The high level symposium on Disaster Risk Reduction in Kathmandu brought in a number of high level dignitaries and donors along with the policy makers, technical experts and development partners. In order to include all the Verified Minors and Late Recruits (VMLRs) in the rehabilitation package, the registration date has been extended up to 22 March 2011 by the United Nations Interagency Rehabilitation Programme (UNIRP). The UNDP Nepal Country Office in coordination with the UNDP Country Office in Afghanistan received a delegation comprising of Senior Officials from the Ministry of Interior, Afghan Women’s Network and Civil Society. Parliamentarians from Denmark and Norway were in Nepal on a five day visit to see the first-hand development challenges that the country faces as it shifts from a decade long conflict to democracy. The Department for International Development (DFID) and UNDP have signed a cost sharing agreement of US$ 0.59 million for ’Institutional Strengthening and Professional Development Support for the establishment of the Central Data Centre’, to be administered by UNDP Electoral Support Project. UNDP Nepal Country Director Ms. Anne-Isabelle Degryse-Blateau left Nepal on 14 January 2011 to start a new UN assignment in South Korea. The UNDP Western Terai Landscape Complex Project (WTLCP) has facilitated the formation of three new community forest users’ groups in Kanchanpur, a far-western terai district.... Download PDF
