    AusAID, UNDP sign AUD 3.1 m cost sharing agreement to reduce poverty in Nepal

    UNDP Micro-enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP)and AusAID have once again ventured on a new partnership (AUD 3.1 million or US$ 3.3 m) to reduce poverty in Nepal. This is expected to directly benefit 5500 entrepreneurs and create 8000 new jobs in 2012. With this, the total funding of AusAID for MEDEP will amount to AUD 9.015m (US$ 9.6 m).

    10.19m voters digitally registered

    As of mid February 2012, the signatures, fingerprints and photographs of 10.19 million voters (10,190,689 citizens) have been digitallycaptured. The Election Commission of Nepal (ECN) started the nationwide voter registration of all citizens 16 years and above in September 2010 with the support of UNDP Election Support Project (ESP).

    Medicinal plants help reduce human-wildlife conflict

    The UNDP Western Terai Landscape Complex Project (WTLCP) has been promoting Mentha and Camomilecultivation near the protected and buffer-zone areas for the last five years. These aromatic plants are high value cash crops that grow very well in this region. This is also the best non-lethal way to keep unruly rhinos away from farms and avoid crop destruction and the resultant human-wildlife conflict.

    US$ 5.7 million approved for life-saving HIV drugs and supplies

    UNDP in Nepal has signed the US$5.7 million agreement with the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) for Round 7 Phase 2 grant. UNDP received the first of two disbursements—US$2.4 million, from the GFATM on 19 October 2011.

    Environmental trends and deep inequalities threaten progress for the poor

    The new UNDP Human Development Report, “Equity and Sustainability: A Better Future for All,” was launched today by Hon’ble Deependra Bahadur Kshetry,Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission. The report places Nepal 157th out of 187 countries with an increase in the Human Development Index from 0.428 in 2010 to 0.458 in 2011. Nepal ranked 138 out of 169 countries in 2010.

    Managing solid waste through public private partnership

    Until few years ago the sanitation situation of Biratnagar Municipality, a major industrial hub and the second largest city in Nepalwas in a bad condition. Garbage was left in the open in public places. The Municipality was not able to provide a door-to-door collection service or sanitary disposal of solid wastes. According to the city data for 2008 Biratnagar, this densely populated city with 22 wards produces about 55 tons of garbage everyday.

    Efforts to boost 'Third Gender' rights in Nepal

    On 21 December 2007, the Supreme Court of Nepal rendered a landmark decision in ordering the Government to amend all discriminatory laws against LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex) and formally recognize the LGBTI as ‘third gender’ in accordance with their sexual and gender identities.

    Government, donors undertake field visit for joint programme

    The Government officials and development partners of Local Governance Community Development Programme (LGCDP)comprising of representatives from ADB, DFID, CIDA, Danish embassy, UNDP/UN System and Norwegian embassy undertook a joint field visit to Kailali and Kanchanpur districts.     UNDP, AusAID sign cost sharing agreement to boost micro-enterprises

    UNDP and AusAID have signed a 1.5 million AUD cost sharing agreement to further support the Micro-enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP). The additional fund received will be spent on improving the policy environment at the macro level, strengthening the capacity of the local bodies, non-government and private sector organisations.
