The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and UNDP signed a AUS $ 1.3 million cost sharing agreement to support the establishment of an Electoral Education and Information Centre (EEIC) in the Election Commission of Nepal (ECN).

The UNOPS (United Nations Office for Project Services) and UNDP have signed an MoU, handing over the responsibility of the actual construction work to the UNOPS.

The Australian Election Commission, based on their own experience will provide inputs in the final design of the Centre.

The establishment of EEIC will strengthen the Commission?s capacity to conduct free and fair elections through greater public information activities, train the Commission's staff on election-related subjects such as voter education and also conduct research during and after the elections.

(UNDP Electoral Support Project is a 3-year technical assistance initiative for the inter-elections period (2008-2011). The project support aims at building a sustainable and enduring institutional and professional capacity within the ECN for future elections in Nepal. )
