    Integrating disaster risk management into development planning

    The UNDP Disaster Risk Reduction in Nepal (DRRN) project organised a five-day (20-24 Feb) national level training in partnership with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (APDC) on Integrating Disaster Risk Management into Development Planning with the assistance of the European Commission Humanitarian Aid department.

    Supporting the localization of Millennium Development Goals

    A joint mission from UNDP Regional Centre Bangkok and SNV Asia Regional Office, Vietnam under the UNDP-SNV (Netherlands Development Organisation) partnership for cooperation agreement - Strengthening local level capacities for achieving the MDGs, visited Nepal from 14-23 February. The UNDP-SNV partnership has been supporting the ongoing project Localization of MDGs in District Planning and Monitoring in Nepal. This project is implemented by the Ministry of Local Development in 5 districts- Jumla, Humla, Mugu and Dolpa and Taplejung.

    Developing capacity for peace

    UNDP’s Assistance to the Peace Process in Nepal (APPN) project has been providing technical assistance to the peace process since the beginning of 2007. At the request of the Government, the project ran a one-day workshop on 21 February to bring out the priorities and plan of action for formulating a new project to strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction (MoPR), to implement its mandate for a successful peace process.

    Support to the Peace Process in Nepal

    The Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction (MoPR) with support from UNDP Assistance to the Peace Process in Nepal (APPN) project organised a one day workshop to identify the priorities of the Nepal Peace Trust Fund (NPTF) for 2009. The workshop also contributed towards effective communication between the Peace Fund management, donors, implementing agencies and partners, especially after the relocation of the NPTF to the MoPR.

    Center for Constitutional Dialogue Comes into Operation

    The Center for Constitutional Dialogue (CCD) was inaugurated today by the Rt. Hon’ble Subash Chandra Nembang, Chairperson of the Constituent Assembly. The Centre, established with the assistance of the UNDP/Support to Participatory Constitution Building Project (SPCBN) and a consortium of donors (Denmark, Norway, DFID, Switzerland, USAID/OTI) are committed to supporting the constitution building process in Nepal. The Centre is governed by a national advisory board and will work in close collaboration with the CA Secretariat to support the constitution building process.

    `Rautes’ visit capital to ensure their nomadic rights

    A group of six `Rautes’, the nomadic tribe from the western Nepal hills, completed their week long visit to Kathmandu in early January. During their high profile tour to the capital, they met with President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Chairman of Constitution Assembly Subhash Nembang and Finance Minister Babu Ram Bhattarai.

    Joint monitoring visit to Nepal Peace Trust Fund projects

    A joint team composed of staff from the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction (MoPR), donor agencies and UNDP’s peacebuilding and Recovery Unit visited Chitwan, Nawalparasi, Nepalgunj and Kailali districts in December to monitor the projects funded by the Nepal Peace Trust Fund (NPTF).

    Art of Living commemorates International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

    On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, a musical event was organized by The Art of Living Foundation, a social and spiritual organization, in an open air theatre in downtown Kathmandu where altogether 4000 people stood-up in the campaign to end poverty while the pledge was being read out by Pandit Din Bandhu Pokharel, a spiritual leader.

    UN in Nepal puts spotlight on poverty with Guinness World Record Attempt

    More than three hundred people including school children and disabled gathered at the United Nations office in Kathmandu this morning to remind world leaders about their commitment to end extreme poverty by 2015, and to join millions of people around the world attempt to set an official Guinness World Record for the most number of people to STAND UP Against Poverty.

    Ryutaro Hashimoto Asia Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED) Award 2008

    UNDP GEF/SGP grantee, Manahari Development Institute-Nepal, has won the ‘Ryutaro Hashimoto Asia Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED) Award 2008’ - a GOLD (1st) prize in recognition of the outstanding contribution in promoting environmental management and sustainable development. The award was given in the 4th Plenary Meeting (award giving ceremony) at Davao, Phillipines on 25 July 2008.

    HIV/AIDS and Mobility

    The SAARC-UNDP-ILO regional workshop, Leadership and Development Challenges in Addressing HIV/AIDS and Mobility held in Kathmandu (23-25 June) agreed upon that migration per se is not a risk factor for HIV, rather it is the conditions under which people move that often makes them more vulnerable to HIV. Therefore, there is a need to integrate HIV/AIDS into policies and programmes for migrant workers and their families.

    Deputy Speaker a new star in BBC World Service Trust radio drama

    Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chitralekha Yadav embarked on a new career as a radio actor this month when she played herself in the radio drama Katha Mitho Sarangiko. The drama is produced by the BBC World Service Trust as part of the UNDP Participation in Peace and Constitution Building project.

    The first ever draft of the National Strategy for Disaster Risk Management in Nepal (NSDRMN) is ready and awaits government’s final endorsement. A joint event with the Ministry of Home Affairs was organised to acknowledge the completion of the draft as a mile-stone towards achieving the goal of `Disaster Resilient Nepal’.
