    UNDP Nepal launches new initiative to foster development debate; first debate focuses on challenges in measuring poverty

    As a part of its new initiative to foster debate and on development issues and challenges, UNDP Nepal organized its first Dialogue Series on Friday. The first debate focused on challenges of measuring poverty with special reference to Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). Dr. Sabina Alkire, Director, Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, Oxford University, and a key architect of the MPI presented latest MPI findings on Nepal.

    UNDP to provide support for credible elections to be held in June

    The nine-month old political deadlock formally ended in Nepal at midnight Wednesday after major parties signed a deal to hold fresh elections for a Constituent Assembly. Those elections will be held on June 21 under the caretaker government led by the country’s Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi.

    Nepali civil society organizations for common position on Post-2015 development agenda

    As a part of ongoing consultations on post-2015 development agenda, NGO Federation of Nepal (NFN) organized a National Civil Society Consultation Programme on Post-2015 Development Framework today. Major civil society organizations and key stakeholders, including government agencies, participated in the consultation. Nepali civil society organizations (CSOs) have begun intensifying discussion among themselves to zero in on a position paper that represents civil society view at national level. NFN has already conducted similar district and regional level consultations within Nepal.

    UNDP to focus on reducing poverty, disaster and climate-induced vulnerabilities of communities in next five years

    The Government of Nepal and UNDP signed today a new Country Programme Action Plan (2013-17) detailing UNDP’s engagement in Nepal for the next five years. The Plan will focus on efforts to reduce vulnerability of communities under threat from climate change and disaster and expanding energy access, while continuing its support for elections, constitution writing and income generating opportunities. During this period a budget of approximately USD 159 million will be used for implementing these programmes.

    Training to mainstream 'Do No Harm' tool

    UNDP’s Conflict Prevention Program (CPP) and Nepal Administrative Staff College (NASC) organized a 4-day Training of Trainers on Theory and Application of the ‘Do No Harm’ Conflict Sensitivity Tool for trainers of different government training academies. The training was conducted from February 5 to 8, 2013. The purpose of the training was to enable government trainers to design and implement their own Do No Harm orientation sessions and stand-alone courses.

    Fire Fighting Training ( Phase 2)

    Today the 2nd phase of the Fire Fighting Training started at Special Task Force Battalion of APF (Armed Police Force) in Halchowk, the training will go on from 11th February till 8th March 2013. This training is supported by UNDP/ CDRMP and builds on the 1st phase from October 2012 where personnel were given basic fire services training.

    Nineteen more bird species in MohanaKailali Corridor

    19 new bird species, including the Asian Paradise-flycatcher, Himalayan Bulbul, and Large Cuckooshrike, were recorded in the MohanaKailali Corridor in the western Terai (plains) of Nepal, increasing the total count to 111 from 92 species in June 2011 . Mr. DayaramChaudhari, a local expert on birds, and his team assessed bird life in the corridor in May and June of 2012. The assessment was coordinated by the MohanaKailali Community Forests Coordination Committee.

    Female Masons Trained in Earthquake Safe Construction for the First Time in Nepal

    For the first time ever in Nepal, an exclusive training for female masons on earthquake resilient construction techniques was organised from 10 to 14 September 2012 in Kathmandu. Masons are a crucial aspect for ensuring compliance with building codes and reducing vulnerability to earthquakes. In an industry traditionally dominated by men, this innovative training programme became the first to focus and build capacity of women and recognises their contribution to safe construction in Nepal.

    The Hon'ble Vice Chair of the National Planning Commission (NPC), Hon'ble Members of the NPC, the Governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank (Central Reserve Bank of Nepal), Chief Secretary and 12 Secretaries engaged in an in-depth discussion on gender and macroeconomic policy management during a 2-day high level interaction programme on 20-21 August 2012, organized by the National Planning Commission with support from Strengthening Planning and Monitoring Capacity of NPC project/UNDP Nepal and UNDP Asia Pacific Regional Centre, Bangkok.

    Building a Better Nepal: Partnering with Youth National Youth Festival 2012

    To celebrate the International Youth Day, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Youth NGO Federation Nepal and United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme jointly organized National Youth Festival on August 12-13, 2012 in Kathmandu, with financial and technical support from several NGOs, INGOs and organizations working in youth, employment, poverty alleviation and other areas. The theme for National Youth Festival 2012 “Building a Better World: Partnering with Youth” is a global call to action for young people and other stakeholders to develop partnership with youth and engage youth towards building a better world.

    Products of Nepalese entrepreneurs find international market

    The entrepreneurs supported by UNDP Micro-enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP) organised a small scale exhibition at the Australian Embassy, coinciding with the visit of Richard Marles, Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs. On behalf of the Government of Nepal, Chief Secretary Lila Mani Poudel, was present on the occasion to interact with and observe the products of the micro-entrepreneurs.

    “Search and rescue capacity important for crisis response….”

    About 35 experts and participants from 17 countries in the Asia Pacific region shared their crisis response strategies, progress and the shortcomings to cope with natural disasters, during the 2-day International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) Asia Pacific Regional Meeting held in Kathmandu recently. The regional meeting was hosted by the Government of Nepal with technical support from UN OCHA, Humanitarian Support Unit Nepal for the second time in Kathmandu after April 2009.

    Sustainable energy for all (SE4ALL)

    The Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) 4-day mission to Nepal ended with a hope to get different partners working together on energy sector in the country. SE4ALL is UN Secretary General’s initiative launched in September 2011. The initiative aims at ensuring universal access to modern energy services, doubling the rate of energy efficiency and doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

    Policy makers, bureaucrats discuss disaster, climate risk...

    Policy makers and bureaucrats of Nepal have been working to integrate Disaster Risk Management (DRM) and Climate Risk Management (CRM) agenda into development plans. Some government officials from the National Planning Commission and sectoral ministries engaged in a fruitful discussion and developed a framework to integrate DRM/CRM into national development process during the two and a half day workshop organised by UNDP, supported by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC).

    After completing the first round of nationwide voter registration process, the Election Commission of Nepal (ECN) is currently displaying the preliminary list of voters in 75 districts, Village Development Committees (VDCs) and ward offices for ‘claims and objections’.

    National Planners trained on mainstreaming Disaster Risk Management and Climate Risk Management

    Sustainable Disaster Risk Management (DRM), Climate Risk Management (CRM) and the protection of development gains in Nepal requires the mainstreaming of these approaches into planning, policies and programmes. In recognition of the importance of these issues, a national training on mainstreaming DRM and CRM was jointly organized by the National Planning Commission and the UNDP Comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Programme with technical support from Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre.
