Nepal’s Minister for Finance and Industry Honorable Shankar Koirala lauded Nepali micro-entrepreneurs for their success in crop diversification and for contributing to the Government’s efforts to reduce trade deficit. The Minister made the comments on 8 January in Kakani, Nuwakot while on a visit to strawberry farms that have received support from Micro Enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP).

A roadmap to formulate the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) is likely to be prepared by the end of November this year. The roadmap will envision a detailed sketch as to how the NSDS has to be developed in the country which is yet to prioritise a better data and statistical system.

UNDP Nepal launches new initiative to foster development debate; first debate focuses on challenges in measuring poverty
As a part of its new initiative to foster debate and on development issues and challenges, UNDP Nepal organized its first Dialogue Series on Friday. The first debate focused on challenges of measuring poverty with special reference to Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). Dr. Sabina Alkire, Director, Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, Oxford University, and a key architect of the MPI presented latest MPI findings on Nepal.

UNDP to focus on reducing poverty, disaster and climate-induced vulnerabilities of communities in next five years
The Government of Nepal and UNDP signed today a new Country Programme Action Plan (2013-17) detailing UNDP’s engagement in Nepal for the next five years. The Plan will focus on efforts to reduce vulnerability of communities under threat from climate change and disaster and expanding energy access, while continuing its support for elections, constitution writing and income generating opportunities. During this period a budget of approximately USD 159 million will be used for implementing these programmes.

The entrepreneurs supported by UNDP Micro-enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP) organised a small scale exhibition at the Australian Embassy, coinciding with the visit of Richard Marles, Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs. On behalf of the Government of Nepal, Chief Secretary Lila Mani Poudel, was present on the occasion to interact with and observe the products of the micro-entrepreneurs.

UNDP Micro-enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP)and AusAID have once again ventured on a new partnership (AUD 3.1 million or US$ 3.3 m) to reduce poverty in Nepal. This is expected to directly benefit 5500 entrepreneurs and create 8000 new jobs in 2012. With this, the total funding of AusAID for MEDEP will amount to AUD 9.015m (US$ 9.6 m).

Until few years ago the sanitation situation of Biratnagar Municipality, a major industrial hub and the second largest city in Nepalwas in a bad condition. Garbage was left in the open in public places. The Municipality was not able to provide a door-to-door collection service or sanitary disposal of solid wastes. According to the city data for 2008 Biratnagar, this densely populated city with 22 wards produces about 55 tons of garbage everyday.

UNDP and AusAID have signed a 1.5 million AUD cost sharing agreement to further support the Micro-enterprise Development Programme (MEDEP). The additional fund received will be spent on improving the policy environment at the macro level, strengthening the capacity of the local bodies, non-government and private sector organisations.

The report (an updated version of Nepal Trade and Competitiveness Study 2004) is launched at a time when the trade and economic situation of the country portrays a bleak picture in export performance and balance of payment.

The 21 households of Guta settlement of Devesthan Village Development Committee in Achham district have greatly benefitted from the irrigation project supported by the UNDP Quick Impact and Peace support Initiative (QIPSI) programme implemented in 2009. Achham is one of the remotest districts of Nepal. It is accessible by automobile from Kathmandu via a paved road that runs along the western border of Nepal from Dhangadi.

The Enhancing Access to Financial Services (EAFS) project was launched on 8 April by Dr. Yubaraj Khatiwada, Governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank (Central Bank) in the presence of the representatives from microfinance institutions, donors, development partners and other stakeholders. The project provides grant support to selected microfinance institutions to enable them expand their services in 24 districts in the hills and mountain regions covering 54 out of 75 districts in the country. The major objective is to provide access to affordable financing to very remote areas and poor people.
