    A new initiative on climate change to benefit nearly 100,000 vulnerable people in Nepal

    Community Based Flood and Glacial Lake Outburst Risk Reduction Project (CBFGLOF), a joint initiative of GoN and UNDP, will directly benefit an estimated 96, 562 members of climate change vulnerable communities. The project contributes to Nepal’s National Adaptation Plan of Action’s (NAPA) Profile 3 and 4 ‘Community-Based Disaster Management for Facilitating Climate Adaptation’ and ‘GLOF Monitoring and Disaster Risk Reduction’ respectively.

    DELL partners with UNDP to increase computer education in rural Nepal; contributes 40 laptops to schools powered by renewable energy sources

    DELL, a leading global IT company, today collaborated to provide 40 laptop computers to schools in rural Nepal. The recipient schools are powered by renewable energy sources promoted by UNDP and the Government of Nepal.

    Nineteen more bird species in MohanaKailali Corridor

    19 new bird species, including the Asian Paradise-flycatcher, Himalayan Bulbul, and Large Cuckooshrike, were recorded in the MohanaKailali Corridor in the western Terai (plains) of Nepal, increasing the total count to 111 from 92 species in June 2011 . Mr. DayaramChaudhari, a local expert on birds, and his team assessed bird life in the corridor in May and June of 2012. The assessment was coordinated by the MohanaKailali Community Forests Coordination Committee.

    Government commits to address adverse impact of climate change

    The Government of Nepal, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) jointly launched the “Ecosystem based Adaptation in mountain ecosystem in Nepal (EbA)” Project today. The project aims at implementing an emerging approach to help people to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change.

    Medicinal plants help reduce human-wildlife conflict

    The UNDP Western Terai Landscape Complex Project (WTLCP) has been promoting Mentha and Camomilecultivation near the protected and buffer-zone areas for the last five years. These aromatic plants are high value cash crops that grow very well in this region. This is also the best non-lethal way to keep unruly rhinos away from farms and avoid crop destruction and the resultant human-wildlife conflict.

    Environmental trends and deep inequalities threaten progress for the poor

    The new UNDP Human Development Report, “Equity and Sustainability: A Better Future for All,” was launched today by Hon’ble Deependra Bahadur Kshetry,Vice Chairman of the National Planning Commission. The report places Nepal 157th out of 187 countries with an increase in the Human Development Index from 0.428 in 2010 to 0.458 in 2011. Nepal ranked 138 out of 169 countries in 2010.

    Renewable Energy for Rural Livelihood programme kicks off

    The Government of Nepal (GoN)—Ministry of Finance (MoF), Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) and the United Nations Development programme (UNDP) have signed the project document for implementing Renewable Energy for Rural Livelihood (RERL) programme in 26 remote districts of Nepal. The total budget of the programme for the period between 1 April 2011 to 31 December 2012 is US$ 1,508,150.
