November 2005; Mr. Govind Bharati is a member of the Setidevi Community Organisation of Kunchok Village Development Committee of Sindhupalanchowk district. He has been involved in incense stick making after participating in a week long training organised by Rural Energy Development Programme (REDP). He has proved how small investment can be very fruitful to increase income. Mr. Bharati says, "I have invested Rs. 18,000 in the incense stick making and I have earned handsome amount from this income generation activity." There is glow in his wrinkled face and seems to be proud to have started his own business rather than request others for help.

The 56 years old Mr. Bharati says, " I have earned Rs. 29,000 from this enterprise during more than one year time. I just make the incense stick during the leisure time. My family members support me in making the sticks. I have divided them the responsibilities so the work is being done accordingly. The training provided by REDP was very fruitful, as I have been able to start my own business. " The people of Kunchowk are being attracted towards incense stick making. Mr. Keshav Acharya is also doing the same business and feels very happy.

" I have taken training on how to make incense stick and found it very fruitful, says Mr. Acharya. If done properly, even a small enterprise can also be fruitful for enhancing the livelihoods of the rural people. Mr. Acharya has earned over Rs. 50,000 from the incense stick making during less than one and half year period and bought a plot of land (one Ropani). He very happily says, "I earned the money from incense stick making and became able to buy one Ropani of land at a cost of Rs. 50,000." We just make the incense stick during the leisure time and we have no problem of the market as these can be sold locally, they say.
