I am delighted to take part in this conference on popular culture, understanding what it is and how we can leverage its immense and pervasive power to promote human development and specifically to fight against HIV and AIDs and Gender based violence. Allow me to thank the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Namibia and Prof. Fikeni Senkoro of the UNAM Language Centre for organising this conference. UNDP is glad to have been given the opportunity of partnership and of funding the conference.

The City of Windhoek and its partners celebrated the 2014 International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) on the 22 October 2014 at the Katutura Old Age Home. The theme for 2014 is “Resilience is for Life” with a focus on Older People and Disasters. The IDDR aims at celebrating how people and communities are reducing their risk to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of disaster risk reduction.

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon officially inaugurated the United Nations House in Windhoek, Namibia yesterday alongside the President Hifikepunye Pohamba. The Namibian government built the United Nations House in Klein Windhoek to allow for better coordination of UN agencies working in the country.

UNDP hold inception workshop for the new project aiming to strengthen the management of Namibia’s protected areas system
The expansion of Namibia’s protected areas has resulted in emerging management challenges like fire outbreaks, Namibia’s vulnerability to the increasing threat of poaching of key species, such as elephants and rhinos. These challenges need to be urgently addressed to enhance the benefits of protected areas network to Namibia’s development.

Africa regional meeting on Integrating Gender-Based Violence and HIV Prevention, Treatment and Care into National Alcohol Policies
To date, while national policies may encompass two of the three issues of harmful use of alcohol, gender-based violence (GBV) and HIV, the three are rarely addressed together causing a significant gap. Looking at the three issues (GBV, HIV and harmful use of alcohol) we can see that there are varying levels of understanding of the relationship between gender inequality and the three issues of focus in this initiative.

While alcohol consumption can have some limited medical benefits, its excessive use does negatively impact the social and economic fabric of society. It is responsible for many health and social hazards and it undermines productivity and constrains national development efforts. Therefore, legislation aimed at regulating the production, sale and consumption of alcohol remains critical.

I wish commend the Foreign Secretary Hague and the UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie; who will be hosting the Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict in London next week to raise awareness against sexual violence in conflict.

The United Nations will devote the first week of May to getting out the vote for its MY World opinion poll, organizing a multitude of activities in more than 50 countries to raise awareness of and boost global participation in its efforts to foster a conversation with the world's citizens that will better inform future international policy-making.
