UNDP and GFATM gathered project professionals from Southeast Europe, Central Asia and Pacific in Montenegro
With an aim to strengthen program management capacities in countries where UNDP is a primary recipient of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) grants, a four-day regional workshop has been organized in Montenegro.

In order to get the staff of social welfare centers in Montenegro properly informed about the project Social Card – SWIS (Social Welfare Information System) and the on-going and forthcoming reform processes in social protection, the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare of Montenegro, Branch Trade Union of Workers in Social Protection and UNDP Montenegro organized a conference for around a hundred participants - directors and expert employees of centers for social welfare.

Montenegro will host UNDP’s 3 day global session What role for innovation in the Strategic Plan?, the first global meeting that the largest UN agency has organized in this country. The session will gather nearly 70 UNDP senior level executives, Resident Coordinators and innovation champions from 26 countries at 4 continents.

In the next 6 months Montenegro will have a collective “voice” on Twitter - representatives of the NGO Center for Democratic Transition (CDT) and the UNDP Montenegro announced as they launched the project “Montenegro on Twitter – Engage to Change!” aimed at strengthening citizens’ engagement and civic activism through that social network.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Montenegro and the Office of the Chief Negotiator, in collaboration with UNDP's Capacity Development Programme, organized a workshop on the preparation of Montenegro for negotiations on Chapter 22 - Regional policy and coordination of structural instruments. The workshop was an opportunity to exchange views in the direction of creating the best institutional and organizational solutions for quality use of IPA funds and preparations for the future use of EU Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund. Those funds are earmarked for job creation and creation of better living conditions.

Montenegro participated in the Bright Spots competition at the Open Government Partnership summit in London
Montenegrin mobile app “Be Responsible” was among seven 7 shortlisted initiatives vying for the Bright Spots award at the London summit of the Open Government Partnership, where more than 1,000 participants, from over 70 countries, were gathered on 31 October and 1 November. The winner was the Citizen Participatory Audit (CPA) project from Philippines.

Montenegro succeeded in destruction of a great part of its surplus ammunition. The demilitarization of 1400 tons of conventional ammunition in country’s facilities in an environmentally safe manner has been completed, too. However, there are still over 4000 tons of surplus weapons to be destroyed, which pose an environmental and human security risk. Brezovik, an ammunition storage site also represents a constant menace for the people living within at least 15 kilometers range.

The project “Strengthening mechanisms for public finance at the local level in Montenegro”, which has just finished, supported the development of capacities of municipal stakeholders and stakeholders at the central level in introducing transparent, accountable and results oriented budgeting that reflects capital investments and local and national strategic priorities.

“Women's businesses - the potential of the Montenegrin economy” was the main topic of the conference geared towards economic strengthening of women. The Union of Employers (UE), International Labour Organization (ILO), Ministry for Human and Minority Rights and Association of Business Women in Montenegro co-organized this conference together with the Gender Programme IPA 2010. Organizers wanted to make known findings of the report “Assessment of environment for female entrepreneurship in Montenegro”, recently conducted by ILO and UE.

The modernization of society has resulted in a significant shift in the world’s demographic profile. The number of older people has tripled over the last 50 years and it is expected that by the year 2050, more than one in every five persons in the world will be aged 60 or over. In these terms, the situation in Montenegro is not different than in any other country. According to the latest census 18.3 percent of the Montenegrin population is older than 65 years.
