    UNDP helps develop institutional capacities in Montenegro to design, plan and manage a more representative system of protected areas. The project will assist in mitigating the current biodiversity threats in protected areas, and will aim at extending the protection status by at least 21,000 ha and creating a new Marine Protected Area.

    It is estimated that the total funding for protected areas is at least 50% below what is required for its effective management. With the planned expansion of the protected area system, this funding gap is expected to increase even further. Hence, UNDP is finding ways to raise the capital needed to effectively manage Montenegro’s expanding protected area system.
