Mongolia has been an active member of the United Nations since it joined as the 101st member in 1961. Over the past 5 decades, the relationship between the UN and Mongolia has matured into a strong and mutually beneficial partnership. The United Nations in Mongolia consist of 11 agencies that contribute to development across various sectors ranging from the promotion of human rights, to support to democratic governance, to fostering socio-economic development as well as facilitating access to quality public services such as health, education, water, sanitation and protecting the environment. Mongolia has become an increasingly important contributor to UN peace keeping operations currently providing 944 troops to operations in 5 countries.

2015 does not only mark the 70th anniversary of the UN. It also represents a once in a generation opportunity in development with four key agenda setting conferences taking place in a single year including the UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, the International Conference on Financing for Development, the Sustainable Development Summit and the Climate Change Conference. On 25 September, all 193 member states adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out the global priorities for both people and planet. The SDGs are a call to action to end global poverty, fight inequality, protect the planet and ensure that all human beings enjoy peace and prosperity without leaving anyone behind.

The United Nations in Mongolia sees it as our main priority to support Mongolia in ensuring that economic growth and development progress are truly inclusive and equitable while at the same time safeguarding its natural resources for future generations. To make this happen we are striving to build an ever more relevant UN for Mongolia. This is a UN that generates top notch and timely advice for Mongolian policy makers. It is also a UN that has the trust to work on difficult and complex issues in the Mongolian development context today and tomorrow.

We are delighted to present this brochure that provides a brief description of the UN agencies in Mongolia and a snap shot of our work as ‘One UN’.
