Male’, September 24, 2013: UNDP closed the Maldives Meetup of the 2013 Social Good Summit with the theme of "“Equality through Access to Information – Democracy in 2030”, engaging panelists in a discussion centered around the link between technology and equality, and how access to information using technological means is crucial to drive political, social and economic forces within the Maldivian society.

Part of a global set of conferences convened during UN Week, the Social Good Summit gathered innovators from the worlds of technology, philanthropy, and social activism to share ideas and address how new media can be used to make the world a better place.

This year's Summit in Maldives engaged technologists, broadcast and print media representatives, civil society and youth group leaders in a panel discussion aired over the state television station. The discussion demonstrated how advocacy, adoption and use of new media and technological tools are the mediums through which people can be empowered, and government services, educational resources and information can be directed to encourage greater social, economic and democratic participation, and can ultimately be effective means for a well-balanced future.

“This is an invaluable and powerful opportunity to discuss and better understand equality through the lens of access to information; a key undertaking towards a democratic future," said Tony Lisle, UNDP Resident Representative. He emphasized how the discussion was particularly important as the global community maps out the next set of overarching goals following the expiration of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015.
