Forty young men and women representing all atolls of the Maldives will participate in a three-week intensive programme that aims to develop leadership skills, and enhance their knowledge in civic education.

The Pictalk project, through the photovoice methodology, aims to create a web-based platform where youth are presented with the opportunity express their opinions, concerns and perspectives, both individually or as a group, through pictures and photography. Youth are given the opportunity to showcase their photography skills, while also telling a deeper story based on a periodically selected theme.

The conference is targeted to support local NGOs advocating for Human Rights issues and aims to provide a platform where such NGOs could share their knowledge and experience amongst each other. Furthermore, the conference would allow NGOs to present their challenges in their line of work and to discuss on possible steps that could be taken to overcome such challenges.

UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Ms. Shoko Noda presents her credentials to President of Maldives
Ms. Noda also briefed the President regarding the ongoing work of UN Agencies in the Maldives and reaffirmed their commitment towards supporting the government and the people of Maldives in furthering the significant achievements of the country in the developmental front. She further highlighted that key developmental priorities of the government will be reflected in the projects undertaken by the UN Agencies in the country.

One of the major strategies in making tourist facilities and associated communities climate proof is by establishing small- scale, innovative, climate proof investment projects. Efforts by TAP to initiate this process by providing small grants, received over 40 concepts for demonstrable pilot projects. This includes the protection and conservation of fresh water resources to deal with draughts, adopting community rainwater harvesting systems, hydroponics and water dripping system in agriculture, as well as sustainable use of mangrove systems for livelihood and tourism activities.

UNDP and Government of Maldives sign the new Policy Programme ‘Sustaining inclusive and sustainable growth through building productive capacities’
UNDP’s new two-year programme will play a catalytic role in helping the Government of Maldives address emerging issues that have been identified as key national priorities. Furthermore, under the programme UNDP will also support in strengthening national capacities of the government. The programme will also support the government’s Youth Entrepreneurship Programme and in addressing youth unemployment.

More than forty participants took part in the event, including senior officials from the Government of Maldives, staff from UNDP and the Ministry of Tourism and members from local NGOs. Guesthouses operating in Hulhumale’ sponsored the bikes which the participants rode, while the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) based in Hulhumale’ and the Maldives Police Service also supported the event.

UNDP Maldives held a national workshop to share the preliminary findings of the Justice and Legal Sector Baseline Study, this Wednesday. The Local Research team from Villa College and Maldives Law Institute, along with the International Team Leader Leigh Toomey presented the findings to the participants of the workshop.

The project, through a web-based application, aimes to connect local communities to their respective local councils to address municipal concerns such as waste management, street lighting and problems regarding erosion. The application will allow members of the community directly report their problems, and by using Google Maps, pinpoint the exact location of the specific problem to the council without the need to physically present themselves at the council secretariat. Members of local communities can either report their issues through a mobile app, or by text messaging and as well as an online reporting system.

The Maldives Human Development Report 2014 – Bridging the Divide: Addressing vulnerabilities, Reducing Inequalities – focuses on themes of vulnerability and inequality. The report aims to understand the inequalities and vulnerabilities facing the Maldives, while highlighting on the need for more evidence-based decision making in the country. The report comes after thirteen years since the launch of the First Human Development Report for the country in the year 2001

The documentary, ‘Good Practices on Waste Management’ explores the waste management practices in the islands of Alif Alif atoll Ukulhas, Meemu atoll Dhiggaru and Haa Alif atoll Vashafaru. The video shows the three islands have come up with locally-led solutions in waste management and the successful replication of them in other island communities, most prominently Raa Atoll Ungoofaaru.

UN Agencies and Government of Maldives launch the Low Emission Climate Resilient Development Programme (LECReD)
The LECReD is a three-year joint programme worth US$ 9.2 million aims at responding to the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) Outcome 9: Enhanced capacities at national and local levels to support low carbon life-styles, Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction. The programme is a unique joint-initiative that capitalizes on the comparative strengths of UN Organizations including the UNDP, UNICEF, UNOPS, UNFPA, UN WOMEN, WHO and FAO to ensure smooth implementation.

UNDP Maldives and the Attorney General’s Office hold first high level stakeholder meeting on the roll-out of the Maldives’ new Penal Code
The first high-level stakeholder meeting on the roll-out of the Maldives’ new Penal Code organized by UNDP Maldives and the Attorney General’s Office was held yesterday. The meeting was well attended by senior officials including the Chief Justice, justices of the Supreme Court of Maldives, Judges from the High Court of Maldives, the Attorney General, the Minister of Home Affairs, senior officials from the Maldives Police Service and members of Independent Institutions including the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the Anti-Corruption Commission of the Maldives.

Third Women’s Leadership Program held for female candidates contesting in the upcoming 2014 Parliamentary Elections
The WLP is jointly carried out by the UNDP along with local NGO Democracy House. Participants of the workshop are given extensive training and knowledge on skills such as leadership, public speaking and campaigning. Knowledge sessions have also been incorporated into the workshop that provides comprehensive information on the constitution as well as certain key legislation.
