- "MAGEY THIMAAVESHI" - Environment Quiz INBOX US YOUR ANSWERS TO WIN PRIZES! Rihaakuru (fish paste) is a staple in the average Maldivian diet. Did you know that 36 litres of rihaakuru is produced by burning one fully grown coconut palm and wood of a fully grown tree continuously for 12 to 14 hours (These fully grown trees can be either Funa (Alexander Laurell wood plant), Dhigga (sea hibiscus), Hirundhu (portia tree) or Uni (Nit Pitcha)). In order to reduce loss of biodiversity from wood fuel use for rihaakuru and to minimize pollution, an NGO from Thaa Atoll - Hirilandhoo Zuvaanunge Jamiyya introduced a special type of machine which uses electrical energy (that could be obtained in the form of solar energy). This machine is also expected to reduce work load, and detrimental health effects that can result from exposure to smoke and long hours of extreme heat. This idea is implemented as a part of a small grant project by Global Environmental Facility’s Small Programme (GEF SGP) in the Maldives. GEF SGP was established in the year of the Rio Earth Summit. By providing financial and technical support around the world to projects that conserve and restore the environment while enhancing people's well-being and livelihoods, GEF SGP demonstrates that community action can maintain the fine balance between human needs and environmental imperatives. GEF SGP Maldives though established years later in 2010, has contributed close to USD 2 million (MVR 28 million) of grant assistance to 54 community-led projects in various parts of the country.
