6 Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases

Where we are?

Maldives has not yet achieved and cannot afford to be complacent on MDG6. The country has shown commitment and progress toward the targets of this Goal. Nonetheless, major challenges remain to be overcome both on HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases, and will require further sustained efforts. In particular, it will be crucial to maintain Maldives’ low-prevalence status with regard to HIV.

UNDP recognizes the importance of combating HIV/AIDS in Maldives. The challenge for Maldives is to ensure it remains a low HIV prevalence country despite increasing high risk behaviors among some populations. As the Principal Recipient of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, UNDP managed the funds and coordinated the activities of the HIV/AIDS programme implemented through government agencies, non-governmental organizations and other development partners.
