Strategic Environmental Assessment of Renewable Energy
Recently, the activities to conduct the Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Renewable Energy Sector were launched as part of the larger activities undertaken by the “Mainstreaming Climate Change into Lebanon’s Development Agenda” project; the project is funded by the Lebanon Recovery Fund and is implemented by the Ministry of Environment.
The strategic environmental assessment aims at assessing the environmental, social and economic impacts of the national renewable energy strategy, which is under preparation by the Ministry of Energy and Water and the Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation. The SEA will also develop measures for effectively addressing identified impacts, therefore establishing a tool that will assist the developers of the national renewable energy strategy, at the early stages of decision making, in sustainably optimizing the strategy and fully integrating major environmental, social, and economic concerns in line with the SEA guidelines developed by the Ministry of Environment. The contract was awarded to Earth Link & Advanced Resources Development in association with LDK Consultants Engineers and Planners S.A. consulting companies, and the work should be completed within a period extending up to 9 months.
The kick-off meeting took place on the 5th of November, 2013, with the presence the major stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Water – Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation, Electricité du Liban
