    Australia boosts access to inclusive finance

    The Government of Australia has committed A$5.9million (US$6.15 million) to support the UNCDF-UNDP Joint Programme “Making Access to Finance More Inclusive for Poor People (MAFIPP)”. The contribution was confirmed today at a ceremony, where an agreement was signed between H.E. Sonexay Sithphaxay, Deputy Governor of Bank of Lao PDR, H.E. Lynda Worthaisong, Australian Ambassador to Laos and Mr. Minh Pham, United Nations Resident Coordinator, in UN House in Vientiane.

    New Community Radio goes on air in Nonghet

    The ethnic communities of Hmong, Khmu and Phong in Nonghet District, Xiengkhuang Province, can now tune into radio broadcasts in their own languages, thanks to a new community radio station launched in Nonghet on Thursday, by Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

    Walk marks the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action

    The Government of Lao PDR and the International Community affirmed their commitment to a world free from the threat of mines and other remnants of war on Saturday morning in Patuxai Park, Vientiane. Hundreds of people gathered to witness the special ceremony and take part in a “fun walk/run” in an event organized by the UXO Sector in Lao PDR to commemorate the International Day of Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.

    Ireland commits further €2million to support the UXO sector in Laos

    The Government of Ireland has confirmed its commitment to support to the UXO Sector in Lao PDR through a multi-year contribution of €2 million (2,7 million USD) through to 2015. The contribution will further strengthen the capacity of the National Regulatory Authority (NRA) and UXO Lao, the two national institutions tackling the deadly legacy of unexploded ordnance in Lao PDR. The funding will be channelled through the UXO Trust Fund, administered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

    New Zealand boosts UXO Lao operations in Xieng Khouang

    The Government of New Zealand has stepped up its assistance to tackle unexploded ordnance (UXO) problems in Lao PDR’s second most contaminated province, Xieng Khouang.     Lao artist wins UNDP Asia Pacific cartoon contest on climate change

    Asia-Pacific cartoons depicting the effects of climate change on children, Chinese cities, the Pacific Islands and mangrove forests won a regional contest sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of France. Cartoonists from Bangladesh, China, India, Lao PDR, Palau, Papua New Guinea, and the Philippines have been recognized on this year’s Earth Day for their original artwork depicting climate change and human development in Asia-Pacific countries.

    Australia commits further funds to tackle UXO in Lao PDR

    The Australian Government reconfirmed its strong support to the UXO sector in Lao PDR today by contributing a further AUD 1 million to the UXO Trust Fund. This contribution is un-earmarked and will boost UXO Lao operations, including UXO clearance, roving tasks, surveys, risk education and training.
